"Oh, I’m very serious," Fergus purred, enjoying the look of dawning terror on Cullen’s face. He reveled in the power he suddenly held over the trembling wolf. "And let me tell you, they were none too happy about what they heard."
Cullen let out a groan of frustration that was broken by a humorless laugh. He lunged at Fergus, his large hand wrapping tightly around the boy’s scrawny arm. "You stupid, stupid mutt!" he roared, his voice thick with rage. "You think you did something bad here? I was just helping Kylo! You think I had the balls to tell Isleen myself? To tell her I am in love with Kylo? Well, thank you for relaying the message. You’ve done nothing but to relieve me of my burdens!"
Fergus felt a surge of dark amusement whirling within him. Working up someone like Cullen into being this serious was beautifully entertaining.
Helping Kylo, was it? He scoffed internally. The idiot must thought he was Isleen who overlooked things like they were a spec of dust and believed everything she was told.
"Even if that were true, which it isn’t," he countered, voice dripping with venom, "you wouldn’t live long enough to see any good come out of it."
Cullen scoffed back, mistaking Fergus’s amusement for fear. "Is that supposed to scare me, little boy? You wouldn’t hurt a fly."
A laugh, albeit shaky, escaped his lips. He looked down at Fergus with a cruel amusement flickering in his eyes. "You? Threaten me? A little boy who wouldn’t be a challenge to a single finger of mine?"
He squeezed his grip on Fergus’s arm, but to his surprise, it didn’t elicit a whimper of pain from him. Instead, the boy’s face remained emotionless with his gaze unwavering.
"If I were you, Cullen," Fergus said slowly, his voice taking on a dangerous edge, "I wouldn’t be so confident to underestimate me."
Fergus felt a surge of rage course through him. He wanted to rip Cullen to shreds, to make him pay for every condescending look, every whispered insult. But a sliver of cunning held him back. It would be far more satisfying to watch Cullen’s arrogance crumble when he realized exactly who he was dealing with.
"If I were you, Cullen," Fergus said, his voice low and dangerous, "I wouldn’t underestimate me."
Cullen’s amusement vanished instantly and was replaced by a whiff of annoyance. He reached out to grab Fergus again, but this time, Fergus was faster. He lashed out with a speed that defied his small stature, his fist connecting with Cullen’s jaw with a sickening crack.
Grrr!
Cullen yelped in surprise, stumbling back and clutching his face. Before he could recover, Fergus was on him again. And then, it became a whirlwind of fists and fury. Cullen, who was bigger and stronger in his wolf form, should have easily overpowered the seemingly frail Liam.
But something was off. Fergus’ blows landed with a force that shouldn’t have been possible, and his movements were inhumanly fast and precise.
Cullen, finally realizing the gravity of the situation, tried to shift. He let out a throaty growl, his body contorting as fur began to sprout from his skin.
