Cullen formed an "o" with his mouth, finally understanding where I was coming from.
But he still spoke nonetheless. "Liam being missing isn’t your fault, Isleen. You did your best just like any mother."
"Oh, did I?" I chuckled, even though there was nothing funny about what I was thinking about now. "I did my best in harboring a monster you mean? Cause that’s what my so-called son was. A monster! Who would’ve guessed that Liam was actually a vampire all this while?"
I let out those words before I could comprehend what I’d just done. I’d shared with Cullen, a confidential piece of information that Rhett had trusted I and Kylo with.
Gosh, Isleen you’re such a blabber mouth! Focus, focus, focus...
"I’m sorry, Liam is a what now?" Cullen blinked rapidly, shock etched on his face. I could only sigh, not having the strength to answer Cullen’s questions.
"Never mind, Cullen." I breathed out heavily, staring at nothing in particular.
We remained silent, Cullen brushing my hair gently while he still had an arm wrapped around my shoulder. He was probably giving me time to process my thoughts. Or was probably also processing everything I’d said too.
Finally, Cullen spoke up. "I think it’s cool that you were able to take a break away from your mate. But you do remember that we’re currently living in his house, right? Sooner or later you’d have to face him again."
I blinked awkwardly. Cullen had a point.
"I’m aware of that, Cullen." I sighed, gently pushing his arm off my body. "Thanks. I think I need a long bath."
And with that, I got up, heading straight for me and Lupe’s room upstairs. Once there, I took off my clothes before walking into the shower.
I turned it on, letting its cool waters wash down my body. Wash away the guilt. The pain. The dirtiness of last night.
I couldn’t help thinking of Kylo, imagining his reaction if he found out his dad and his ex had had sex. He’d probably never forgive me or look at me the same way.
"Ugh, Isleen, you’ve gotten yourself into some deep shit," I chuckled to myself, running my hands through my hair. I felt like I was losing my mind.
Is this how it feels to lose one’s mind? Now I was talking and laughing to myself, without a care in the world. Maybe I have gone mental...
Suddenly, I felt a chilling presence nearby. It sent a cold shiver down my spine, causing me to tense up. It’d been a while since my special ability showed itself.
And now, it sensed something. I sensed something. Something dark, monstrous, and downright malicious. There was a vampire nearby.
I felt my heartbeat increase rapidly, as my hands trembled. I looked at the bathroom door, contemplating on if I should come out or just stay hiding there. But then I remembered that Cullen was still downstairs, probably unaware of the imminent danger.
I couldn’t just let him die. I looked outside the bathroom window. The sun was still out, since it was still late in the morning, which meant one thing. This vampire was the shapeshifter who’d been posing as Liam!
I felt a strong urge to see him, to confirm with my own eyes if he truly was what Rhett said he was. There was still this nagging feeling, this hope inside that Liam was still alive. Maybe my son was just mistaken for another child whose form the vampire had taken.
All those happy memories together, all those times he hugged me and called me ’Megami’ until it irked me, all the times he grumbled about how hungry he was. Even when he’d stood up for me against the vampires during the last attack.
That couldn’t have all been fake, right? There had to be a part of the vampire that actually cared about me. That craved my motherly love as much as I missed his presence.
