I blinked as I watched Cullen—no, Fergus —gaze at me with a predatory glint in his eyes. He wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore. It was as if he was telling me that he knew... He knew that I was onto him.
But I would not let myself get intimidated.
My hands went to my jogger’s pants pocket, clutching the lighter there tightly. I held my breath, anticipating his next action.
But just then, he placed a palm on the wall behind me, and it seemed like the predatory glint in his eyes had disappeared and was replaced with a more ’friendly’ one.
"You needed some air?" Fergus chuckled softly, his eyes lingering on my neck for a few seconds before moving to my eyes. "Away from what?"
His hot breath pricked my skin, causing the hair on my neck to stand on end. I gulped, cursing my body for this weird reaction.
What was this bastard doing? Was he... Was he going to kiss me? I wasn’t blind, I could see his eyes trailing constantly from my eyes to my lips.
However, when it felt like the pressure in the room was about to reach a new tipping point, I heard a click on the door. Before I could shift away from Fergus, Kylo walked in.
Damn it, Fergus didn’t even try moving away!
Kylo turned his gaze to us just then, and I watched the radiant smile that’d been on his face when he stepped in disappeared and got replaced with a suspicious scowl.
"Uhh... What the heck did I walk into?" Kylo arched an eyebrow, his eyes moving from Fergus to me.
He gave me a dirty look and didn’t even try to hide the disappointment on his face.
I stuttered as I tried explaining myself. "K– Kylo, it’s not... It’s not what it looks like! I– I... We were just–"
He didn’t even give me a chance to explain and walked away, heading for the stairs. He brought out his phone from his pocket and began typing something and soon after, he was giggling like a little girl, forgetting about what he’d just witnessed.
Moon goddess, have mercy!
"Cullen, what the heck is wrong with you?!" I snapped, using my palms to try to shove him away.
When he didn’t budge, I squeezed myself away from him and tried getting the heck out of there, but was pulled back by his strong grip on my wrist.
"Ah! You’re... You’re hurting me." I muttered, my voice getting shaky as my eyes met Fergus.
For a brief second there, I felt I saw a red light flash within those eyes. And all through this, his smile didn’t even falter. Not once.
Suddenly, Fergus blurted. "It doesn’t have to be this way, Isleen." His voice was a whisper, hitting the back of my head like a wrong note from a musical instrument.
He pulled me closer, but I struggled, giving him a warning glare.
