Chapter 76: _ He is Beyond Me

As soon as my feet touched the pavement, a mournful whine tore from within me.

My wolf.

She yearned to get back to him, to submit to his dominance– to be a part of this new and terrifying connection. Tears streamed down my face, blurring the world that seemed to be spinning around me.

Why?

Why did this have to happen?

Why did my heart ache so fiercely for a man who was forbidden?

What could I have done to always be this unlucky? It always felt like the whole universe had come together to make life unbearable for me. freewebnøvel.coɱ

If any more mishaps happened to me, I doubt I’d ever be able to handle any of them.

I sank onto the curb, burying my face in my hands as sobs wracked my body. I couldn’t hold it in any longer.

The truth was, I was crying more because of the longing that had settled in my heart for Gamma Rhett. I didn’t want to move away from him. I in fact wanted to walk back to him. To tell him I wouldn’t reject him any longer.

That there was an us.

Yet, I knew this was the work of the mark. Normally, we were supposed to have a passionate night after being marked. Well, that was for normal folks who didn’t have such a circumstance surrounding their union.

The one case I knew of that was close to oirs was Raya who was mated to her mother’s new husband.

The mother ended up killing her daughter and herself in the end. The man walked a free man but both mother and daughter died.

This mate rule was toxic and could break families. The Moon Goddess— if she loved us, she needed to do better.

Why couldn’t things just be simple?

Why mate two impossible people?

Through the haze of my misery, I suddenly felt a presence behind me all thanks to my special power.

I knew who it was.

Wiping my tears with trembling fingers, I spun around, ready to lash out.

Gamma Rhett stood there, his face contorted with concern. "Isleen, I’m just..."

"Don’t," I interrupted, my voice hoarse. "Just... stay away from me. What are you following me for after I’ve made myself clear enough?!"

He didn’t move, but his eyes held a stubborn glint. "I’ll keep my distance," he said. "But I’m not leaving until I know you’re inside safely. It’s late. Can’t have you walking alone while the pack’s unsafe."

Why was he talking as if I was walking ten miles? My house was just a few walks away.

"In case you’re forgetting, I’m a wolf. It’s the only reason why I’m caught in this miserable situation with you." I blurted and began to walk away.

However, before I turned, I saw a glint of something that seemed like hurt in his eyes. Gamma Rhett wasn’t the type to feel hurt, so maybe I saw it wrongly.
