The room fell silent as Gamma Rhett’s booming laughter echoed through the space. I almost couldn’t believe my ears. This aloof man who had probably forgotten how smile was... laughing?
Even Lupe seemed to have forgotten her grief as she turned to him in utter surprise, mouth agape, and eyes widened. The soldiers also had their eyes bulging out in surprise as they watched their Gamma raked with laughter.
Here was the stoic Gamma Rhett, the man known for his icy demeanor, erupting in unexpected gaiety and for what...?
Just because I was rude to him?
As quickly as it started, though, the laughter vanished, leaving behind a ghost of a smile on his face that disappeared the moment he realized everyone was staring.
He cleared his throat, regaining his composure. "My apologies," he rumbled, his voice regaining its usual sternness. "Now, Isleen, what were your thoughts on Mrs. Brenda, Lupe’s mother?"
I blinked, thrown off by the sudden shift in his expression. It was almost scary to see the man who had been shaking with laughter suddenly frowning and serious.
Gamma Rhett would almost give me the goosebumps.
Finally, "Honestly, I didn’t know her well. We only met once." I said.
"Did you speak with her during that encounter?" Gamma Rhett pressed.
I furrowed my brow. This line of questioning felt oddly specific. Where was it leading to? "Yes," I admitted cautiously.
"And what was your impression of her during this encounter?" Gamma Rhett tapped his pen impatiently, and leaned forward with sharp eyes.
I took a step back. What was he doing leaning forward to me?
I glanced at Lupe again. She was talking quietly to Liam now, a small smile playing on her lips. A warmth bloomed in my chest, a foreign sensation that both surprised and confused me. At least, she was talking now - the poor girl.
Taking a deep breath, I turned back to Gamma Rhett.
"I’d rather not say," I said carefully.
He visibly bristled. "Isleen," he began, a low groan edging into his voice, "if we’re going to get to the bottom of this, cooperation is crucial. That’s why I’m personally handling the investigation. Now, please answer the question."
I considered his words and I saw the frustration evident in his chiseled face. I didn’t want to give a bad statement about Lupe’s mother but if Gamma Rhett was insisting like this, I guess I had to be truthful.
Finally, I sighed. "Look," I started, choosing my words carefully, "Mrs. Brenda– well, she didn’t exactly make the best first impression. But that’s not important."
"Every detail is important," he countered, his jaw clenched. "Now, if you’ll just tell me—"
"Alright," I began, bracing myself. "Mrs. Brenda, well, she kind of... verbally bullied me.
Gamma Rhett’s face, to my surprise contorted in a twinkle of something akin to horror. "Verbally bullied you?" he repeated, his voice tight with a strange emotion.
Was I missing something?
"Yeah," I mumbled, feeling strangely exposed. "She– well, she said I wasn’t worthy enough to be raising Liam."
A wave of nausea washed over me as I saw the full impact of my words. Gamma Rhett’s face had gone pale, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and – anger?
I didn’t think. I wasn’t thinking. I just knew I hated to see that look on his face. I didn’t like him looking like he’d been hit with a wave of terrification.
"Are you alright?" I reached out a doubtful hand towards him, concern warring with the sudden awkwardness that filled the air within me.
His gaze snapped to mine, and for a breathless moment, we were locked in a silent stare. The air suddenly felt suffocating. My wolf began to tell me that I needed to suck in air from his mouth.
Suddenly, the younger soldier who came with Gamma Rhett initially cleared his throat loudly. "General Farkas called, sir," he announced. "He said the Alpha is ready and waiting."
