Moonlight In Chains (Trinity and Asher) novel Chapter 46

The Day He Forgot He Hated Me by Evangeline Marrow 46

##TRIGGER WARNING:MILD s****| ASSAULT##

I sat on the ground, leaning against the wall, my cheeks stained with tears in almost a

catatonic state.

I didn’t look at the other girls. I heard Lila trying to talk to me but I didn’t even respond to her. I didn’t look at them. I just stared straight ahead.

Trinity. Please talk to me. I am so sorry about your mate. That’s the worst thing that can happen. Please, you have to talk to me. You want to try and escape.Lila said. But I still didn’t respond. I just stared straight ahead.

I heard the other girls whimpering as they cried softly. Knowing that losing your mate is the worst pain imaginable.

Only moments ago I was the one that was wanting to escape and now I’m the one that doesn’t care. I can only think of my mate. He was killed because of me.

I should have stayed away. I knew that I should have stayed away.

I told him that he could do better than me.

If I rejected him when I had the chance then I would have been in pain then but at least I would know that he’s alive. At least he would still be alive and I wouldn’t be living this hell that I’m in right now.

The memory of his laugh cuts through everything like a blade. It’s ridiculous how a single sound can feel heavier than the silence in this place. I can feel the sweat cooling on my skin, the grime of the mine under my fingernails, and each small sensation pulls me back into the same looping thought: if only. Faces flash in the darkhis face, the way he tilted his head when he tried to make me smile, the last look we sharedand each one slams into me until I don’t know where I end and the memory begins. Lila’s voice grows quieter, then steadier, like someone lowering themselves into the water to reach me. I want to care about escaping again. I want to move. But the weight in my chest is a stone and it keeps me pinned to the floor, while outside somewhere the world keeps breathing without him.

Trinity. Please?Lila asked.

What happens to us if she’s lost hope? She was the one that wanted to get out.” Another girl whispered to Lila.

Just give her time. She only just lost him.Lila snapped at the girl.

Spencer walked into the mine and stopped directly in front of me. His boots crunched on the loose stone, the sound echoing off the walls, but I didn’t react. I just stared at the wall opposite me, every muscle heavy and useless. He studied me for a moment, as if trying to decide whether it was worth breaking me further, but he must have known by now that I wasn’t going to fight back. Not anymore. Not after everything.

When I gave him nothingno glare, no tremor of fearhe lost interest and moved further into the cave. His shadow stretched over the other girls, and the tension in the air thickened like smoke before a fire. Then came the scream. Highpitched, raw, desperate. One of the girls pleaded with him, her voice shattering against the stone walls, but her chains clattered helplessly.

The others started sobbing, their muffled cries filling the mine, but none dared raise their voices against him. The sound of rattling chains filled the darkness as she struggled, but it was no use. Spencer only laughed, loud and cruel, taking satisfaction in their terror. I stayed frozen, every nerve in my body screaming to shut down. I couldn’t turn, couldn’t watch, couldn’t let myself see what was happening. My mind built walls around me, and all I could do was listen as her pleas turned to whimpers and then silence.

When it was finally over, he let her collapse to the ground with a thud that reverberated in my bones. His laughter followed, cold and mocking, as he fixed his clothes. Then, as if nothing had happened, he walked back and stopped right in front of me again, his shadow falling across my face.

You’re nothing without him. Good luck to you being found now.Spencer taunted before he kept walking towards the entrance.

Asher and I are lying in bed together. He’s pulled me really close to him. I can feel his warmth.

I can smell his scent. He’s playing with my hair and I feel safe.

He tightens his grip around me and leans down to my ear.

I promise that one day we’re going to get out of this pack and actually have an adventure together.Asher whispered to me.

You mean when we’re actually allowed to leave the pack?I asked.

Yeah. And we’re gonna go and have fun. I want to show you how fun life can actually be.He

said.

You’ve already shown me.I said. And he leaned down and kissed me.

I suddenly felt Lily inside my head starting to stir. She couldn’t come to the front of my mind. She couldn’t help me. But she was fighting just to get through to me. But then I looked straight ahead again and Asher was kneeling in front of me.

Asher.I whispered.

Baby. You can’t give up. You have to keep fighting.” Asher said.

I can’t. I have nothing to fight for anymore.I said.

Yes, you do. You have a lot more to fight for than anyone else.Asher said.

Not without you. You’re gone.I said.

That doesn’t mean you can give up. Don’t let me die in vain.He said.

I can’t fight him. He’s too strong. He always has been.I said.

No Trinny. He’s a bully. You’re the strong one. You suffered at his hands for so long and yet you’re still standing. If that’s not strong then nothing is.he said.

I stared at Asher’s face right in front of me, knowing that he wasn’t really here. Knowing that it was just wishful thinking and my imagination running away with me.

Lilly probably had a lot to do with it as well, but I finally turned to look at the other girls and I saw the girl that Spencer just hurt. The one that he just attacked.

She was facing the wall, not able to face us, while crying.

Lila was looking at me and they all knew that I’d faced him before. I could do it again.

But he only got caught last time because the twins caught him. They caught my whole family and figured out what was going on so they banished my family.
