The disaster worsened. Though the old house’s location kept it mostly safe, by nightfall the phone signal was patchy.
With the storm warnings they’d received, it was uncertain whether she could return to Cole for work the next morning.
That evening, after dinner, Maggie checked in with the Miller family and then called Johnny, telling him she was at the Wilsons‘ old house and might not make
it to work tomorrow.
Johnny replied. “The situation’s bad. Cole’s already told staff to work from home tomorrow. No rush. I’ll handle urgent matters, and we’ll talk through the rest
tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
Later, Maggie sat on the rug with Isabella, playing with puzzle toys, while Franklin read on the sofa.
An hour passed. Franklin stood and came over.
Maggie kept her head down, but Isabella looked up. “Daddy? What is it?”
Franklin’s eyes were on Maggie. “Want to play chess?”
Maggie did like chess–and Franklin was a formidable opponent. Against anyone else, she might have risen to the challenge. But against him…
She shook her head lightly. “Not interested.”
Franklin didn’t press. “Then why not go upstairs and read a while?”

“No.”
She had bought them but hadn’t had the time.
Without another word, Franklin went upstairs. A few minutes later, he returned with several books in his arms.
He placed them in front of her.
Maggie paused, then looked up. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
She opened a book and began reading. Franklin didn’t disturb her again.
That night, Maggie slept in Isabella’s room with her. Franklin didn’t come by.
– The next morning-
When Maggie went downstairs, Franklin was on the phone. After breakfast, Johnny called to discuss work. Without a computer, she asked the butler to borrow one, but he admitted his had broken last year and he hadn’t replaced it.
Franklin went upstairs silently and returned with a laptop. Setting it in front of her, he entered the password as he spoke it aloud.
Maggie glanced at the desktop–it was clearly Franklin’s personal work computer.
The tasks she had involved Cole’s confidential material. She could double check her files before and after to ensure nothing leaked, but Franklin was an expert too. She couldn’t gauge the depth of his capabilities.
For him to hand over his main computer suggested trust.
But for her…

Chapter 414
Maggie pushed it back. “Thanks, but no. I’ll just use my phone.”
Franklin seemed to know what she was thinking. Seeing her refusal, he only smiled, nodded, and closed the laptop, carrying it back upstairs without pressing
her.
