With Johnny’s help, the lack of a computer didn’t slow Maggie much.
But that afternoon, Wilson Group had an urgent matter requiring her attention. Without a computer, it became troublesome.
Staring at the documents Wilson Group had just sent, she regretted refusing Franklin’s laptop that morning.
But with things urgent…
She went upstairs, hesitated at Franklin’s study door for two seconds, then knocked.
“Come in.”
Franklin was at his desktop. When Maggie opened the door, he looked up–without surprise. Before she spoke, he asked, “Need the laptop?”
“…Yes,” Maggie admitted from the doorway.
He smiled, pushed the device toward her, and gestured for her to take it.
She stepped in, picked it up. “Thank you.”
He only smiled silently.
Without more words, she left. As she walked out, she heard him turn back to his call: “Continue.”
Back in Isabella’s room, Maggie began working.
Isabella, wanting her attention, grew sulky when she realized Mommy was too busy to even notice her.
Franklin came in. Isabella hugged a pillow and sighed. “Daddy, Mommy’s so busy…”
“Mm,” Franklin murmured, then drew up a chair beside Maggie.
She barely noticed until the sound made her glance sideways. Seeing him, she said nothing and kept working.
Since the work involved Wilson Group, even if Franklin saw, it wasn’t a problem.
He had matters of his own, but lingered, watching with interest. When the time grew late, he finally left with some reluctance.
Maggie worked late into the night.
At dinner, she sat beside Franklin. “I still have a lot to do tonight. Do you need your laptop back?”
“No. You keep it.”
“All right”
Their cordial interaction pleased Old Mrs. Wilson, who fussed over Maggie’s thinness and urged her to eat more.
Afterward, Maggie went upstairs to continue working, while Franklin stayed downstairs with Isabella.
By nine, Isabella had bathed and was ready for bed. Hearing Maggle still typing, she tilted her head and asked, “Mommy, why don’t you go back to your and Daddy’s room to work?”
She didn’t mean to complain about the noise–she was just remembering that in the past, even when Mommy worked, it had always been in her and Daddy’s
room, not here,
Maggie’s hands froze on the keys. After two seconds, she said, “Working here is fine too.” Then, softly: “Sorry, I’m disturbing your rest.”
“You’re not disturbing me.” Isabella yawned. “Goodnight, Mommy. Rest early too.”
“Mm. Goodnight.”
Maggie turned off the main light for her.
