Chapter 447
Levi, bored out of his skull all evening, perked up at the sight of Harry. “You finally made it. You have no idea how dull it’s been without you.”
Harry chuckled, patted his shoulder, and, noticing Julia’s glance, tipped her a perfunctory nod before sitting beside Levi.
Sophia hadn’t known Harry would come.
His blunt rejection of her earlier still stung; when he appeared, she looked once and dropped her eyes, not daring another glance.
“We’ll play Werewolf later,” Levi said. “Tranklin’s not here we can finally have some fun. Otherwise he wins every round and ruins the experience.”
Harry had already eaten but took a bit of barbecue anyway. He clinked cups with Levi and smiled. “All right.”
They’d barely started when Harry grew distracted.
Since arriving, he’d been covertly scanning the area but hadn’t seen Maggie anywhere.
After two rounds, as they were about to begin another, Harry paused, smiled, patted Levi’s shoulder, and pointed. “I’m going to say hi.”
Levi followed the gesture–Johnny–and nodded without a second thought. “Go, go.”
No one else seemed to notice, but Julia had clocked Harry’s distraction from the start.
He ignored her thoroughly enough that he didn’t realize she’d seen through him.
With that, watching him practically hurry off to find Maggie, she pressed her lips together.
Levi did notice Julia seemed out of sorts but assumed it was because Franklin hadn’t come.
Sophia also watched Harry walk away.
Moments ago she’d been afraid to look at him; now she’d seen him see her and choose to ignore her. Her spirits sank lower, and the game lost its appeal.
Johnny had come back for drinks.
He was surprised to see Harry–he’d assumed Harry and Franklin had skipped the outing.
Glancing around and not spotting Franklin, he realized Franklin really wasn’t there.
As Harry approached, Johnny greeted him. “Mr. Becker.”
“Mr. Gray,” Harry returned with a small smile.
After a half–beat, he asked, “Is Miss Miller here?”
Johnny knew Harry and Maggie had been getting along decently. Hearing the question, he pointed. “She is–over there.”
Harry nodded, noting the drinks in Johnny’s hands. “Are those for Miss Miller? If you don’t mind, I’ll walk with you—I’d like to say
Johnny found that thoughtful–respectful toward a prospective collaborator. “Sure.”
They walked a short way before Harry finally spotted Maggie-
and realized she wasn’t alone. Jimmy and Glen were with her.
hello.”
