Harry nodded. “I’ve been here a little while.”
His gaze fell on Maggie and the telescope beside her. “Stargazing?”
“Mhm,” Maggie said.
Harry looked genuinely interested. “What are you looking at now? Mind if I take a look?”
Maggie glanced at Glen. “It’s not my gear, it’s-”
Glen’s face had already returned to neutral. “If Mr. Becker’s interested, go ahead.”
“Thanks,” Harry said with a smile.
He’d handled telescopes before, but not much. As he peered through the eyepiece, he asked, “What’s that red patch in there?”
“A hydrogen cloud,” Maggie replied.
“From which galaxy?” he asked.
They were basic, entry–level questions. Maggie answered without a hint of impatience, though Glen’s eyes cooled as he watched.
Jimmy knew Harry’s company worked with Cole; seeing Harry come over to greet Johnny and Maggie, he thought little of it–just polite small talk.
Glen knew that, until tonight, Maggie hadn’t realized he and Harry both liked her. Since Harry hadn’t confessed either, Glen preferred Maggie remain unaware of Harry’s feelings. He deliberately concealed any hostility.
Even so, Jimmy still caught it–the look Glen gave Harry matched the one he gave Jimmy:frosty, adversarial. Jimmy hesitated, wondering if he was misreading–then saw the way Harry looked at Maggie, and knew he wasn’t.
He shot Harry a glance, surprise flickering in his eyes.
He really hadn’t expected Harry to like Maggie too.
Then he smiled faintly. With someone like Maggie, it wasn’t exactly shocking.
Harry would have stayed and talked longer, but a call came in–work. Meanwhile Levi pinged the group chat, asking why he hadn’t come back yet.
Pocketing his phone, Harry said to Maggie and Johnny, “I need to return a call. Let’s catch up later.”
They nodded. “Okay.”
They went back to the telescope. After a while, Jessica heard there were fireflies nearby and tugged Maggie along to see them.
It was darker and less crowded there; Jimmy and Glen, uneasy about the area, followed.
Plenty of people had the same idea. Not long after they left, Julia also headed that way–alone, lantern in hand.
Before she got close, she saw Jimmy and Glen standing face–to–face with Maggie, carefully setting tiny lights into her open palm.
Julia knew enough about Jimmy and Rex’s circle to know they weren’t close with Franklin or Johnny. On leave, Jimmy should’ve been out with Rex if he went anywhere at all.
If Jimmy and Johnny were suddenly socializing together, there had to be a reason.

And now it was obvious.
If she’d harbored a shred of doubt about Jimmy’s feelings before, she had none now Jimmy truly liked Maggie.
