Chapter 449
Chapter 449
Most campers were here for the meteor shower.
Unfortunately, even past 1 a.m., nothing crossed the sky. Maggie and Jessica turned in.
Johnny, Jimmy, and Glen watched Maggie head into her tent.
Once she’d gone, Johnny cleared his throat, glanced between them, and said, “She isn’t officially divorced yet. If you’re going to pursue her, mind your boundaries. Don’t make trouble for her.”
“I know,” Glen answered first–then frowned. “If I’m not mistaken, their cooling–off period already ended. Why isn’t the divorce finalized? Did something happen?”
Jimmy already knew they hadn’t filed in time; Johnny had roughly explained it, so he kept quiet.
Johnny sighed and repeated, “Her husband missed the decision window. They had to reapply.”
Glen asked. “Then when does this cooling–off period end?”
“Soon. This month,” Johnny said.
It was late, and he was tired. He yawned and waved. “I’m turning in. You two-”
He hadn’t finished when Jimmy suddenly asked, “Who is the man?”
Johnny knew he meant Maggie’s husband.
Because he wanted to court Maggie, Jimmy had contacted Johnny several times, asking about her. He had never asked about the husband–not because he was angry or uninterested, but because that was Maggie’s past. Once the divorce was done, the man would be a stranger. If Jimmy ever had the good fortune to be with Maggie, she’d tell him herself.
Tonight had been the longest stretch he’d ever spent with Maggie.
He wasn’t vain, but objectively speaking, he, Glen, and even Harry were strong prospects by any measure–yet Maggie, careful not to embarrass anyone, accepted their kindness with visible reluctance. Her calm around them was unshakable.
Which made him, at last, curious about the husband he’d chosen not to ask about.
Glen had tried to look into the man before and come up empty; worried it was improper, he’d given up. He, too, could feel that Maggie hadn’t been moved by any of them–not by him, not by Jimmy, not by Harry–and his curiosity only grew.
At Jimmy’s question, both men turned to Johnny.
Johnny paused, lips thinning. He had no desire to say Franklin’s name. He snorted. “Him? A scumbag.”
With that, he left for his tent without another word.
Jimmy and Glen stood there for a beat, taken aback, then said nothing more and headed off to rest.
