The silence in the dining hall is unsettling. Grandfather Blackwood doesn’t speak for the longest time and I’m beginning to wonder if he invited me over just to watch him eat.

My phone buzzes in my purse and I glance down at it briefly. My gaze returns to Grandfather Blackwood only to realise he’s already staring at me, a curious look in his eyes.

I shake my head slowly, recalling Kael’s warning. Grandfather Blackwood is always testing for flaws. More often than not, there’s a hidden meaning behind his words.

My hands clench tightly, but I don’t look away from his piercing gaze. “Kael and I don’t worry about the future yet. Liam’s only three.”

“Indeed.”

That word lands harshly. Three years ago, I was married to Cameron. It’s only natural for anyone to guess there might be foul play.

“I didn’t know about Liam until recently,” he added. “It’s odd. A Blackwood child kept a secret from me.”

His stare is piercing, like he’s trying to see into my soul. Kael and I had thought he called me here because he’s suspicious of Kael.

I shake the thought off quickly. For all I know, Cameron is favoured above Kael. Everyone knows that. That won’t change just because of Liam’s paternity, would it?

And even if it did, I’m Kael’s woman now. He and I are stuck in the same boat.

“What are you asking me, Mr. Blackwood?” I ask,

Tm not asking.” He leans forward, his hands folding across his chest. “I’m giving you an opportunity. To tell the truth. Before someone else does.”

Someone else…there were more than enough people who would jump at the opportunity to pull Liam into a scandal.

I won’t allow it.

“Liam is Kael’s son,” I say firmly. “Cameron’s affairs and that of Blackwood Pack are not mine to interfere with.”

I don’t know what my response means to him. But I’ve given him the only possible answer.

Until the contract is up, Liam can only be Kael’s son. That’s the only way he can truly be safe.

“Very well,” he says finally, leaning back. “Then I’ll keep an eye on Kael.”

I’m not sure how to feel. But it seems like I’ve just altered the succession of Blackwood Pack in a few words.
