My Ex Husband The Alpha His Brother The Rogue novel Chapter 13

The silence in the dining hall is unsettling. Grandfather Blackwood doesn’t speak for the longest time and I’m beginning to wonder if he invited me over just to watch him eat.

My phone buzzes in my purse and I glance down at it briefly. My gaze returns to Grandfather Blackwood only to realise he’s already staring at me, a curious look in his eyes.

You should take that.He suggests. It could be important. Don’t mind me.

I shake my head slowly, recalling Kael’s warning. Grandfather Blackwood is always testing for flaws. More often than not, there’s a hidden meaning behind his words.

And at the moment, I understand I’m Kael’s biggest weakness.

In our short conversation. I’ve realised one thing. He’s well aware Kael and Cameron do not get along and rather than being against it, it even seems like he encourages it.

Like he’s pitting them against each other to see who emerges stronger. It’s disturbing to witness, but not uncommon in Alpha families, especially since the pack can only have one Alpha amongst the two.

I wonder if he realises that this is already beyond a healthy competition. There’s murder in Kael’s eyes when he speaks of Cameron. It’s not just a mere feud between brothers and I might be the only one seeing it.

It’s fine. I can get to it later.”

Grandfather Blackwood doesn’t insist. Instead, he lets the silence settle once again. Finally, he says Kael is a good man.

It doesn’t sound like a compliment. I purse my lips slightly and keep silent knowing there’s more to come.

A sense of wariness blossoms within me. In all the time I was the Luna of the pack, I’ve never been invited to this mansion. It was quietly whispered amongst pack members that Grandfather Blackwood didn’t approve of

me

I couldn’t blame them. I don’t think he approved of me either.

But I never cared Cameron was all I cared about and it took a divorce to make me realise I had no standing or barking whatsoever in Thomeville.

With Karl. I intend to make it different I have Liam to protect now I have no intentions to get run over in the power struggle between the Blackwood brothers and there’s only one person who can keep both of them in

Kael was always the quieter one. The free spirit and the radical. He’s never preferred the spotlight, even when it was his by right Grandfather Blackwood continues.

I don’t know where he’s headed with this, but it can’t be good. And something tells me whatever he’s about to say is the whole reason I’ve been invited here in the first place.

Cameron, on the other hand, was the opposite. He’s loud, charming, and ambitious.Grandfather Blackwood

places his fork down on the plate.

He’s staring at me now, closely. Like he wants to see my reaction to what he’s going to say next.

I saw the boy last night,he says simply. Liam

My heart stutters within me. My fingers curl slightly in my lap but I quickly regain my composure.

If he took notice of my initial surprise or not, he makes no indication of it. He just carries on.

The boy has Kael’s eyes,he continues.

I nod once. Liam did bear a striking resemblance to Kael. But Kael and Cameron are brothers after all, and share many similar features.

Including their eyes

I hope it’s not what I’m thinking. Grandfather Blackwood couldn’t have caught onto us so easily.

Children are strange. They grow into their faces over time. His murmurs thoughtfully. Sometimes, they grow into someone else’s entirely.

My hands clench tightly, but I don’t look away from his piercing gaze. Kael and I don’t worry about the future yet. Liam’s only three.”

Indeed.

That word lands harshly. Three years ago, I was married to Cameron. It’s only natural for anyone to guess there might be foul play.

I didn’t know about Liam until recently,he added. It’s odd. A Blackwood child kept a secret from me.

His stare is piercing, like he’s trying to see into my soul. Kael and I had thought he called me here because he’s suspicious of Kael.

It turns out, he’s suspicious about Liam’s paternity.

1 shrug casually. Kael and I weren’t Blackwoods until recently

His expression cases slightly and he smiles, nodding his head in agreement.

I only ask he continues quietly, because blood matters, Laila Especially in a pack like this.

To the legacy he replies simply And to me

I nod slowly, but I don’t speak.

If Liam is Kael’s son, there are things I must prepare him for Things I must pass down. If he’s notthen I must prepare Cameron

I frown slightly. Cameron is already Alpha of the Blackwood Pack. Is Grandfather Blackwood reconsidering

his succession?

I shake the thought off quickly. For all I know, Cameron is favoured above Kael. Everyone knows that. That won’t change just because of Liam’s paternity, would it?

And even if it did, I’m Kael’s woman now. He and I are stuck in the same boat.

What are you asking me, Mr. Blackwood?I ask,

Tm not asking.” He leans forward, his hands folding across his chest. I’m giving you an opportunity. To tell the truth. Before someone else does.

Someone elsethere were more than enough people who would jump at the opportunity to pull Liam into a scandal.

I won’t allow it.

Liam is Kael’s son,I say firmly. Cameron’s affairs and that of Blackwood Pack are not mine to interfere with.

I don’t know what my response means to him. But I’ve given him the only possible answer.

Until the contract is up, Liam can only be Kael’s son. That’s the only way he can truly be safe.

Very well,he says finally, leaning back. Then I’ll keep an eye on Kael.”

I’m not sure how to feel. But it seems like I’ve just altered the succession of Blackwood Pack in a few words.
