I wake up to a cold and empty bed, unsurprisingly. Kael left our room last night and he didn’t come back in.

With the lake house in such an awkward tension, I can’t help but wonder where he spent the night.

Knowing Kael, he was probably down at the bar with a bottle of vodka and a smoke.

So much for playing the perfect couple all week.

Kael had been the one to suggest it, and also the first to break it. But then again, who’s surprised?

I’m not. I mean it’s Kael.

Like he’d so clearly pointed out last night, the rules are whatever he says they are. Nothing more, nothing less.

I sit up on my bed and the movement sends a sharp jolt of pain through my injured hand. I wince visibly, exhaling a shaky breath.

The pain killers the hospital administered have run out. And I finally feel the full extent of my injuries from the fall.

It hurts terribly, but it’s still bearable enough not to get in the way of my day.

The sun has only just risen, and the lake house is eerily silent this morning. I don’t know what happened between Cameron and Sarah, but after last night, I don’t think today will go by as peacefully as it started.

I’m still lost in my thoughts when I hear a familiar giddy voice,

“Mommy!!!”

My heart leaps in excitement, a delighted smile stretching my lips just as the door bursts open and Liam dashes in, quicker than a ball in motion.

He leaps into my waiting arms and I hug him tightly, careful not to let the pain in my arm show.

“If it isn’t my handsome little boy.” I coo, placing sloppy kisses all over his chubby cheeks.

He giggles hysterically, swatting away my face with his small hands. “No kissy…” He whines,

“But I missed you so badly.” I protest, hugging him closer to me.

A calm I’ve not felt in days finally eases the knots in my heart. I’ve been more worried about Liam than I’ve been about what could possibly happen in this vacation trip.

It’s the first time we’ve been apart for more than a few hours since he was born and I’m not sure I want to go through this again.

For whatever reason, being with the Blackwoods might mean Liam and I will have to be apart more often which is the one thing I’ve always feared.

If Liam is here now, that means Grandfather Blackwood has arrived. It’s earlier than expected, but I’m guessing after what happened yesterday, it makes sense he’s here.

“Wanna tell mommy all about your time with Granddad?” I ask softly.

Liam nods but before he can say anything, Kael appears in the doorway.

He’s already fully dressed in a finely tailored suit. Always the early riser.

His hair is still ruffled and damp from a recent shower and one too many times running his hand through it.

His tie dangles from his grasp as he leans against the doorsill like he’s too lazy to carry his own weight. But somehow, he still looks regal, imposing in a way that is completely effortless.

The alpha genes definitely has favourites and Kael is one of them.

“The old man wants us all down for breakfast,” he says without looking directly at me.

He’s avoiding my gaze, which is unusual for Kael. Even after last night.

He’s not one to feel guilty or remorseful about anything. Not even when he’s in the wrong.

Especially not when he’s in the wrong.

But at the moment, he looks almost… cautious. Like saying too much would expose something he wants to keep hidden.

Whatever it is, I really don’t care to know. Kael’s affairs are his alone, and I’m basically just tagging along for the ride.

“Liam, go to Daddy?” I whisper to him.

He reluctantly peels himself away from my arms and goes over to Kael who crouches and picks him up.

“I’ll be down shortly.” I say, getting off the bed and heading into the washroom.

It doesn’t take too long to wash up and change into something presentable and in less than a half hour, I’m heading down the stairs for breakfast.

Everyone’s already seated when I round the corner and arrive at the table. Including Sarah.

I say my greetings to Grandfather Blackwood, and he responds rather stiftly.

I’m not fazed by it though. If Kael doesn’t care to upset him, neither do 1.

Grandfather Blackwood seats at the head of the table, Kael and Alpha Max are seated on both sides of him, and Shirley is seating after Max.

There’s a vacant seat beside Kael for me and Cameron and Sarah are further down the table.

Given that Cameron is Alpha, this seating arrangement already says a lot about grandfather Blackwood’s

current mood.

At the same time, it’s difficult not to notice the tension between Cameron and Sarah.

Sarah’s eyes are swollen, evidence that she’d been crying all night. And Cameron looks visibly irritated, like he would much rather be anywhere else than seated next to her at this moment.

The revelation from last night seems to be a big deal to the Blackwood family. I’m not sure why, Kael didn’t stick around long enough to share.

But I guess I’m about to find out.

“Liam?” I ask Kael as he gets up to pull out my chair.

I’m not surprised he does. We’ve played the perfect couple for so long, it’s almost instinct now.

No one sees the very obvious cracks. No one should.

“Marie has him. In the next room.” Kael relays to me.

I pass a hesitant look to the door, before taking a seat.

My stomach growls lowly and I silently hope we’ll get to eat something before the chaos begins.

But it’s just my luck Grandfather Blackwood

clears his throat lightly and sits up on his chair.

“It seems to me some big changes are now unavoidable.”
