“Changes?” Cameron asked, glancing up from his plate.“What kind of changes?”

His brows were furrowed in suspicion and he glanced over at Kael and then back at their Granddad.

I’m also wondering the same. Though I think I have a pretty good idea.

Grandfather Blackwood’s eyes narrow at the interruption, but he doesn’t comment.

“The Alphas summit is in a few days. Max and Shirley have worked really hard to prepare for it,” He reminds, gesturing to Alpha Max.

“Hence a scandal at this moment…” He trails off, frowning in displeasure.

“The event requires a series of appearances of the Alpha and Luna of Blackwood Pack. Seeing as Sarah is caught up in an investigation…”

“But…” Sarah’s eyes widened and she attempts to protest but a glare from Grandfather Blackwood cuts her off.

“She can no longer perform the duties of the Luna of Blackwood.” He finishes firmly, “Laila, however…”

His eyes then shift to me, and now all the attention is on me.

Okay, maybe I didn’t have a good idea. Because why am I being dragged into this?

“She still retains a good reputation as Luna. And she’s familiar with the ropes, so I will have her stand in as Luna Blackwood for the rest of the event.”

Grandfather Blackwood’s words result in pin drop silence. Everyone is clearly taken aback, except Kael who just quietly continues chewing on his bacon.

“I’ve been Luna for three years, the Lunas attending the summit are already familiar with me…” Sarah begins to say, “I don’t think Laila will find it easy to adjust,”

Her tone is soft and gentle, almost considerate. Like she’s only protesting with my best interest at heart.

If I didn’t know better, I would also have fallen for it.

“Well, Laila was also Luna Blackwood for three years.” Grandfather Blackwood replies simply, “In terms of expertise, she still surpasses you. Which has been proven in just how much media attention you keep attracting to the family.”

They’re talking about me like I’m not seating right here with them.

Sarah isn’t the only one uncomfortable with Grandfather Blackwood’s decision. The Alpha is still Cameron, and only Sarah’s roles will be reassigned?

I sneak a glance at Kael, but he still looks unfazed. He hasn’t said a word in protest which is completely unlike him.

Last I remember, he throws a tantrum whenever Cameron and I are put together against his own plans.

But he doesn’t look the least bothered. So unless he planned for this…

My eyes widen in understanding, and I purse my lips.

Of course. This had to have been one of Kael’s schemes. The genesis of it was him exposing Sarah’s lies to the world, putting the Blackwood family in a precarious situation.

He must have already anticipated this result. But with Sarah out of the picture, is he trying to push me to Cameron again?

But why now?

I don’t think I’ll ever understand what goes through Kael’s head.

One moment he’s possessive and the next, he reminds me that I’m just his tool to weaken and bait Cameron.

The thought leaves a bitter taste in the back of my throat, especially after what I let slip last night.

I admitted to how much he affects me.

Maybe that’s why he’s doing this. To remind me of my place and which of the Blackwood brothers to hold in my heart.

“The Lunas all have only good things to say about Laila.” Shirley chips in, “They will be delighted to have her fully participate in the summit. I don’t think their acceptance will be a problem at all.”

Grandfather Blackwood hums in approval, “That being said, Kael? Laila? Is this arrangement doable for both of you?”

My hands clench around my utensil as I wait to hear Kael’s answer.

I’m not sure what I want him to say.

Do I want him to let me go to Cameron? Or make it clear that I’m his now?

I don’t think I know what I want anymore. And it scares me…

“I have some business to handle with the Alphas. As for the event… Laila shouldn’t have too much trouble adjusting.” He says, leaning back into his chair.

He still doesn’t look at me. But his words make it clear enough. And so when Grandfather Blackwood glances. my way, I nod slowly.

“I’ll do it.” I agree.

I can practically feel Sarah’s glare burning into the side of my face but I don’t pay her any attention.

I’m more focused on suppressing the anger churning within me.

Kael’s different… after last night, he’s completely different. He sounds almost angry at me.

But he has no rights to be. I’m the one who walked in on my husband with another woman.

What did I do wrong?

“That’s settled then.” Grandfather Blackwood says, “There will be a hunting sport between the Alphas at noon today. Laila will accompany Cameron.”

“As for Sarah,” Grandfather Blackwood trails off,

“You should prepare to return to Thorneville.” He finishes. “I didn’t come with Kelly. So you should go back and look after her.”

Sarah’s mouth opens and closes in dismay. She turns to Cameron who gets up to his feet before she can say anything.

“If that is all, I have a few calls to make.” He steps away from the table and pauses a few steps away.

His eyes find mine, “I’ll pick you up in a few hours.”

As Cameron leaves, Kael also excuses himself from the table.

I don’t linger around for much longer. Muttering a few words to Grandfather Blackwood, I go in search of Liam in the next room.

I find him curled up on an ottoman, fast asleep. Marie’s sitting not too far away, cutting up some fruits in Liam’s bowl.

“The flight tired him out.” She explains quietly,

I pass her a grateful look before going over to pick him up into my arms, careful not to rouse him as I head up to our room.

Kael’s standing by the full length mirror, fixing his tie and his eyes trail me as I gently set Liam down to sleep.

“I’ll watch him today.” Kael says. “Bring him to me before you leave.”

I frown slightly at his words. He’s clearly refusing to address what just happened downstairs.

“Are we going to pretend like that didn’t just happen?” I ask, my tone is low but audible enough for him to hear me clearly.

“Me granting your wish, you mean?” Kael replies with a question of his own.

I scoff beneath my breath, anger churning within me. My wish? What does he know about my wish?

“If it wasn’t for you, I would never have crossed paths with Cameron again.” I remind him. “Don’t forget that. You made me stay by your side in exchange for protecting my son, when you could have just let us go…you did that. It was all you…”

His expression is unreadable, and doesn’t give anything away, but I can tell from the twitch in his brows that he’s not unaffected.

I suck in a sharp breath to keep from raising my voice.

“My wish?” I ask, “No, Kael. This is your wish. It’s always been all about you.”
