My Ex Husband The Alpha His Brother The Rogue novel Chapter 58

The car slows to a stop at the entrance of Greenview woods. The private hunting grounds belongs to one of the Alphas to participate in the upcoming summit.

I exhale a breath of relief.

Being stuck in a car with Cameron for half an hour is not exactly my ideal way of spending the day.

But nothing ever goes according to plan these days.

The entire drive went by in silence. Cameron only chipping in some details of the event here or there, to which I would respond with either a nod or a hum.

The awkward atmosphere between us since the hospital hasn’t changed. There’s just so much tension and too many things left unsaid, I’m not sure how to have a normal conversation with Cameron, without something unnecessary coming up.

Cameron comes around to get my door but I push it open before he can, getting off myself.

My boots sink into the layer of soft snow covering the ground, as I shut the door behind me just as Cameron arrives to my side.

His brows furrow slightly, but he doesn’t comment. Stepping aside to give me some walking space.

The woods are already crawling with Alphas by the time we arrive. The cars are parked a reasonable distance away from the entrance to avoid alarming the wildlife.

I can hear the rough voices of the Alphas as they converse and share booming laughter.

A cold gust of wind wafts by and I shiver, resisting the urge to cross my arms.

I don’t know who came up with the idea to hunt for sport when it’s snowing out. Alphas seem to have a thing for testing themselves against nature, reminding each other of who’s the predator and who’s the prey.

It’s more of a power play than it is a sport.

I can’t wait for all of this to be over so I can get back and snuggle Liam all night.

As for Kael, I’m trying not to think about him. Thinking has never gotten me anywhere with him.

Since he wants me to be here, I’ll only think about playing my part and hope I don’t go against his plans in the process, whatever they might be.

They should be gathered at the rifle shed.” Cameron says,

His gaze is still fixed on the path ahead as he comes over to stand beside me, like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

He gestures to a thin path leading into the woods, offering a small smile. Watch your step. The path is a bit steep.

Right. Cameron was always attentive like this.

Before Sarah showed upbefore everything fell apart, he was the best thing that could come out of an arranged marriage.

The tenderness that is characteristic of him, how he always thinks ahead for my safety,

He’s the perfect father figure for Liam. Different from Kael in ways that cannot be overlooked.

For a moment, I imagine there’s no years of betrayal and a divorce looming between us.

But it’s hard to picture anything without Sarah creeping up in my mind.

Every memory with him is tainted by her presence. By her scentby the marks she left on his skin so I knew when he returned to me that she’d touched him….

Everywhere

Yet here he is, acting like nothing ever happened.

His hand brushes dangerously close to mine as we walk. I don’t look at him, I don’t have to.

But I can feel the weight of his gaze on me as vividly as I feel my own breaths.

He slows his pace to match my strides. Or more accurately, my stomps as I trudge through the snow and force away the thoughts of the past.

They’re of no use to me now.

Lost in thoughts, I’m not paying attention to the path and my boots make contact with a shrub.

I stumble, before kicking at it, puffing out a breath of annoyance through my lips.

Easy there,” Cameron teases as he reaches out to steady me, his hand settles securely around my waist, his eyes shining with amusement. Save the violence for the hunt. We’ve barely even arrived.

A shiver runs down my spine. The cold? It has to be it.

I throw him a glare, pulling my coat tighter around my frame as I step out of his hold.

Cameron sighs quietly but falls into step a few paces behind me.

The closer we get to the rifle shed, the smell of steel and gun oil becomes hard to miss.

An unsettling blend, but I inhale deeply, the smell filling my lungs. The hunt will last the rest of the day, so the earlier I get used to it, the better.

We soon arrive at the shed where the other Alphas are already gathered, adjusting their gear and checking

Alpha Blackwood. One of the Alphas greets Cameron first and the rest follow suit.

When the pleasantries are done, a few of the Alphas glance between the both of us as if just noticing I’m not Sarah.

I’m well acquainted with most of them. So is Sarah.

I resist the urge to chuckle at their expressions.

I’m sure they must have many questions but no one asks. And I’m grateful for that.

Cameron strides into their midst, unfazed by the stares, and I trail behind him slowly, smiling and nodding in acknowledgment where necessary.

The Lunas are in the break rooms.Another Alpha chips in, It’s right through that door.

I frown slightly. I came here to play Luna Blackwood, but now that I’m here, I’m not in the mood to fill in for Sarah.

Cameron responds first, Laila will stick with me.

I glance over at him in question but he shakes his head slightly. You don’t have to force yourself. I know how you feel about these things.” He whispers in a tone audible only to the both of us.

He walk over to the wall to fetch his rifle and I stare after him.

This is going to be a long day. I just know it.
