Chapter 78

The dining hall for the private event is different from where we usually have breakfast.

It’s in a much wider hall in the lake house. The hall isn’t used often as it’s particularly reserved for larger gatherings than a simple family breakfast.
The hall is decorated minimally and screams of elegance, class and quiet luxury. Like it’s a dinner of old friends, rather than a bunch of rivals.
There’s a long table of polished oak wood set in the center, with candles burning low in their glinting silver holders.
Most of the guests have already arrived and are seated at the table. Grandfather Blackwood is at the head of course, with Alpha Max and Luna Shirley to his left.
There are three vacant seats on his right, and I don’t have to wonder why when my eyes find Sarah seated far down the line, at the very end, with her chin lifted too high, pretending not to notice what her placing at the table means.
I take note of the rest of the guests. A few, I’ve known for a long time, a few I met just yesterday, and there’s a few I don’t recognize at all.
This time, it’s not just the top 5 Alphas in the continent like it was at the hunt. It’s at least the top 10 Alphas because there’s quite a few I haven’t seen or didn’t realize they’d taken over their pack from the previous Alphas.
They’re all dressed in finery. Neatly tailored suits and elegant to luxurious dresses.
All eyes turn to the entrance just as Kael and I walk in. The attention is on us now and Kael acknowledges it by steadying his hand on the small of my back.
Their eyes trail us, gazes sharp. Quiet pleasantries are exchanged as Kael guides me to our place by Grandfather Blackwood’s right side.
Kael pulls back my chair, the scraping sound loud in the quiet. As I sit, he also takes his place beside me.
The eyes are still on us even as Kael leans over, brushing my hair behind my ears.
“I must say, Mrs Blackwood is even prettier in person.” One of the newer Alphas speaks up, his voice dripping with false admiration. “The Blackwoods always know how to pick them.”
Pick them? My fists clench.
He says it like we’re commodities. And I’m not even surprised they think so. When everyone knows how easily a Blackwood wife can be discarded.
If what happened with me isn’t enough evidence, Sarah sitting at the end of the table, far away from her appropriate place is a firm reminder of how quickly things change in the Blackwood Pack.

Chapter 78
“Indeed This time, the agreement comes from a much older Alpha
He’s at leam ten years older than Karl is, and he’s openly staring at me, making no attempts to hide his appreciation
Disgust churns in my gut bun I keep my eyes down.
Karl’s voice curs through the silence. Silky smooth but underlined with an edge, “You’ll find this family doesn’t respond well to gawking”
The Alpha in question chuckles nervously and averts his gaze. Perhaps to distract attention from the obvious fact that he’d just made a mockery of himself, he says, “I suppose some people are meant to get forgotten easily
His smile is bright but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. And it doesn’t take a genius to know who he’s referring
All eyes move to Sarah. She’s trying to keep an unbothered facade, but it cracks as Alpha Chase from the hunt chips in.
“Not forgotten.” He drawls, “Replaced.”
The atmosphere in the hall shifts with the weight of his words, especially since Cameron walks in at this exact moment, crossing the room in a few strides to take his place ahead of Kael and right beside Grandfather
Blackwood.
There’s no doubt he heard. But he doesn’t acknowledge the conversation he’d walked in on.
As he sits, he reaches for his glass and a staff is quick to fill it up with wine.
Cameron takes a sip. Calmly, leisurely, like he has all day to give the reaction everyone is anticipating.
Finally, he lowers the glass and says, “Watch your tongue in my house, Chase.” He says without looking up.
It’s a simple statement, but the warning behind his words is clear enough.
Before the tension can take root, Grandfather Blackwood finally speaks, “Enough talking. Let’s eat.”
The hall falls into silence and the air is filled with rich aromas as the food is served.
A staff places a plate of salad infront of me but before I can reach for my cutlery, Kael takes it away and replaces it with the steak he was served.
I pass him a look and he leans over, “Eat what you can now. You might lose your appetite in just a moment.”
I don’t argue because I know he’s right.
The chances of this dinner passing by uneventfully is very slim.
Especially after what happened between Cameron and Tyler at the hunt.

I’m not sure how much the rest of the Alphas truly know, or if Cameron’s allergy was noticed but I’m certain this gathering is Grandfather’s way of making sure things that should be kept under wraps, stay under wraps
I! Karl doesn’t stir the trouble himself.
While the Blackwood Pack is highly respected, this is still a room full of powerful Alphas and the top billionaires in the continent, most of whom are rivals.
This is the perfect opportunity to address issues before the summit where they all have to put on a united facade and act like they’ve not spent decades trying to take each other out.
I’m not sure putting them all together in one room, in our own home is the best idea. But I’m not a Blackwood, so I will probably never think like them.
I pick up my cutleries and slowly cut into the steak, and just as I lift a piece to my lips, the silence is shattered.
