Chapter 79
Laila
“There’s been rumours hinting at a change in the leadership of the Blackwood Pack. Another newer alpha
breaks the silence.
More like shatters it because cutleries stop clinking in almost perfect tandem and a few of the guests exchange subtle glances.
It’s not a surprise that this question comes up. I’m sure it’s been on everyone’s mind since Kael’s return and his partnership with Blackwood Co. was announced.
Even so, there’s a reason everyone keeps their nose out of Blackwood business. But these Alphas who’d recently succeeded their ranks don’t know better.
Not yet at least. But that’s the reason for events like the Alphas summit. Alphas learn to be better Alphas from other Alphas. Alliances are established and hierarchies are made clear.
“If such a drastic change is to be announced at the summit, don’t you think we have the rights to a heads–up?”
I carry on eating slowly. Like Kael said, it won’t be long before I’m no longer able to.
Especially if and when I get dragged into this. And I know I will.
The consistent factor between Kael and Cameron, other than the title of Alpha, is me.
“I didn’t realise you had the free time for speculations, or to entertain rumors, Alpha James.” Grandfather Blackwood says, his tone casual. “And spread them.”
Any other Alpha would have taken the hint. But it seems this Alpha James doesn’t get the memo, because he says, “It’s not considered speculations if there’re more than enough signs and events pointing at it. I think deduction is a better word for it.”
Grandfather Blackwood raises a brow. “Go home. Speak to your Dad, and ask him to teach you again… what your rights are. And what they aren’t.”
The hall falls into pin drop silence. Particularly when Grandfather Blackwood stares at James expectantly.
It didn’t click immediately that Grandfather Blackwood actually meant it when he asked him to leave, but when it does, Alpha James glances around in disbelief.
Realising none of the other Alphas have any intentions to speak up for him or get involved, he rises to his feet, his chair scrapping loudly against the wood.
He seems to have more to say but decides against it, storming out of the hall. His fiancée scurries after him.
The silence lingers again, but the tension fades as Grandfather Blackwood carries on eating like he didn’t just send one of the top ten Alphas in the continent home.

Dinner continues in a much more orderly fashion. With light conversation exchanged between the Alphas
here or there.
But no one dwells too long on anything related to the Blackwoods.
I’d thought Grandfather Blackwood or Cameron would give a direct warning to the Alphas who had been present at the hunt, to keep any information from spreading.
But I see now that it’s not needed. Grandfather made an example of Alpha James precisely to give an indirect warning to any other Alpha that might want to speculate about what happened to Cameron.
Nothing is outrightly said, but from the calm that now rests over the hall, I’m sure everyone understands.
Just when I think the rest of dinner will pass smoothly without me being dragged into it, someone just had to speak up.
“It’s truly a relief to see that Luna Sarah is well.” Cassie, the annoying Luna from the hunt speaks up. “We were all a little worried to see Laila show up, instead of her.”
The words are said innocently, like she means no harm. But there’s nothing innocent about her intentions.
Especially since Alpha Chase has been warned off from making comments towards Sarah and her placement at the table.
A few other Lunas make performative comments about Sarah’s well being.
Meanwhile, Sarah herself is oddly quiet.
I’d have thought this is the perfect opportunity for her to jump in as usual, but it seems Grandfather’s warning was clear enough to keep her in check.
If only someone would talk sense into the one currently mouthing off.
Laila’s truly an icon.” Luna Cassie carries on, “With a busy husband like Kael, and an empire to run, she still makes out the time to fill in for her sister–in–law.”
The jab isn’t as subtle as she must think it is. But I ignore her and carry on eating, chewing slowly on my steak.
I savour the taste, lifting a napkin to pat off the juices that stain my lips. But I don’t get it before Kael’s napkin dabs it off instead.
I keep still and let him. His brows are furrowed in concentration as he daps up the juice, careful to avoid messing with my gloss.
All eyes are trained on us. Because where else would they be?
Kael knows it, and milks the moment for all it’s worth. Being extra attentive to even cut up the rest of my
steak after.
Cassie’s words go unnoticed in the light of Kael’s blatant display of affection, and I can practically feel her

displeasure.

Will we be seeing more of you in our gatherings after the summit? She asks again, “It can’t be convenient to be by Cameron’s side as often as his public appearances are.”
Luna Cassie just isn’t one to give up, is she?
“Kael might begin to feel neglected.” She adds, giggling lightly.
I have no intentions of indulging her, and I know Kael doesn’t either.
“Why would he?” Cameron’s the one who speaks up this time, much to my surprise.
Kael stiffens beside me. Almost imperceptibly, but I notice.
While I know he won’t indulge Cassie. Cameron’s different.
If he says anything wrong, it’ll tick Kael off faster than fuel in flames.
“I mean, he is now the one married to…” Cassie trails off at a sharp look from her husband.
“Laila has never had trouble being a wife and Luna.” Cameron interrupts in a dismissive tone. “She’s always been excellent at both.”
“You’d be wise not to underestimate her.”
Cameron’s voice is steady, but there’s something there. Something concealed in his tone. Something only I can hear, because I know it.
I’ve heard it whispered in the dark, years ago, when his hands were the ones that held mine.
Every eye turns to me again.
The hidden message may have missed them, but the edge of familiarity in Cameron’s tone doesn’t.
