“He’s upstairs with Carl. That poor boy hasn’t woken up yet”.
“Probably all the trauma and not to mention the meds the doc will have him on. Is he going to be all right?”.
Jake would never forgive himself if the boy never recovered.
“Carl seems to think so, but we need him to wake up.”
“Do we know who he is or why he’s here?”.
“We won’t know that until he’s conscious and we ask. Do you want something to drink?”. She asked.
“No thanks. Is Evelyn not here?”.
“She’ll be here a little later. I should have called but I still want us to have lunch. Come sit”.
So, I did. I sat at the table and tried my best to come up with a conversation. It was never awkward between Charlotte and I but sometimes I just didn’t know what to say.
“Jake mentioned your gran had a fall. How is she?”
“She’s fine, cool as a cucumber like always”. Nothing was a big deal to my gran when it came to herself. She could be run over and still she would be fine.
“And how are things between you?”.
“Also, fine”. I smiled.
We would always be fine. We had disagreements, falling outs but we would always be fine when it really came down to it. We were family and that’s all that mattered.
She was the only person I had when I had no one. It had always been the two of us for so long. I could never not have her in my life regardless of what l’ve said in the past.
“Is she back for good?”.
“I think so”. I nodded. “Well, I think she wants to be”.
“And that’s what you want?”. She placed a mug of coffee in front of me. The coffee I didn’t want but I took it with a smile.
“I have no issue with her being here if that’s what you’re asking”. I took a sip of my coffee; I didn’t like the way that came out. I hope it didn’t sound rude.
“Oh gosh sweetheart no”. She stopped what she was doing and came to stand beside me. “I didn’t mean to pry Leah, and I only want what’s best for you. I think your gran being back is great”.
“Let’s hope so”. I laughed. “What are you cooking because it smells amazing”. I asked changing the subject. I didn’t want to talk about my gran and her reasons for staying.
It wasn’t up to me on what she did. Yes, she was staying because of me but that was beside the point.
“Chicken noodle soup and homemade sour dough bread”. She smiled.
Of course, it was homemade, of course, it was sourdough.
Truthfully, I couldn’t wait to taste.
