“The photos turned out really well. Yes, very nice,” she remarked, her voice casual yet tinged with an air of satisfaction.

Oriana’s tone suggested that the quality of the photos was a foregone conclusion. “Should I keep both copies here with me, or would you like to take one back to show someone?”

It was hard not to notice the eagerness in Micah’s demeanor regarding marriage; surely, there had to be some familial pressure lurking beneath the surface, right?

For a fleeting moment, Micah’s expression hardened, a subtle shift that didn’t go unnoticed by Oriana.

“Leave them with you. I’ll take them if I need them later,” he replied, his voice steady but his eyes betraying a hint of something deeper.

“Okay,” Oriana said, her heart racing a little as she quickly tucked the photos away. She felt an overwhelming urge to avoid looking at them again, as if they held some secret she wasn’t ready to confront.

Kieran maneuvered the car back toward their residence, the city lights blurring past them like fleeting thoughts.

The vehicle glided directly into the parking garage, where a sophisticated facial recognition system granted them access to the elevator that would whisk them away to their private floor.

As they reached their destination, the apartment door unlocked with a soft click, courtesy of the smart system that connected seamlessly to their living space.

From inside, a bright, cheerful voice rang out. “Daddy, you’re back! I missed you so much, Daddy!”

Even before she laid eyes on the child, Oriana recognized that exuberant voice.

Suddenly, a thought struck her—Micah had spoken before she had the chance to. “Oh, I also got a gift for your child. Do you think he’ll like it?”

His brows knitted together slightly as he echoed the phrase that sent a ripple of confusion through Oriana. “My child?”

“Yes, isn’t he your son?” Oriana replied, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her stomach.

As she spoke, Oriana retrieved the robot toy from her bag, holding it up with a hopeful smile. “Boys usually like model cars that can transform, right?”

In that instant, Micah froze, his expression shifting in a way that tugged at Oriana’s heartstrings.

A pang of regret washed over her. Did his son not share the usual fascination with cars? Did he prefer something else, perhaps snacks or another toy?

Just as she wrestled with these thoughts, the sound of whirring wheels caught her attention. She turned toward the doorway, her breath hitching in her throat.

“Daddy, I’ve been good these past few days and didn’t wreck the house!” the voice exclaimed.

The jubilant child she had envisioned was replaced by a robot, standing at about her thigh’s height, dressed in an oddly fitting shirt, complete with wheels, wings, and oversized ears.

A robot?

Its enormous eyes scanned Oriana with a curious intensity, processing the unfamiliar data before it spun in place, its wings flapping with excitement. “You’re my mom? Awesome! I have a mom now!”

Oriana was completely taken aback, her mind momentarily blank as she struggled to comprehend what she was witnessing.

Kieran, trailing behind them, observed their expressions, which were a mix of shock and confusion, and he couldn’t suppress a chuckle.
