Quennel's fingers drifted up to caress Victoria's cheek. At his touch, her heart began to race.
She suddenly pressed herself against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Quennel," she whispered, "can't you please make things official between us? I love you so, so much."
A woman who adored him completely was certainly a balm to a man's ego, but Quennel's brow furrowed at her words.
Stephanie would never have demanded anything from him in a moment like this.
He pushed Victoria away and stood up from the sofa. "It's late. I'm going to bed. You should go home."
Victoria was stunned. She hadn't planned on leaving tonight; that's why she had dressed up so carefully.
But Quennel's expression was cold, and he clearly had no intention of letting her stay the night.
Afraid of angering him further, Victoria didn't dare say another word and left, looking back reluctantly with every step.
Midnight.
It was nearly dawn when Stephanie returned to The Obsidian Circle.
After slipping on her slippers, she went straight up to the third floor.
On her first night in the new house, Stephanie's sleep was fitful. She kept waking up throughout the night.
The next morning, she had a meeting scheduled with Ternence. She left early, planning to stop by the office first to prepare her materials.
The instant the front door clicked shut, Jonathan, who had been resting in bed, snapped his eyes open.
Was he imagining things? It felt like an intruder had been in the house.
This was a high-end community with access control and 24-hour security patrols. The likelihood of a break-in was low.
Jonathan sat up.
