Next Man, Better Plan novel Chapter 71

Stephanie frowned, her impression of Jonathan as a playboy deepening.

He wasn't just a player; he was a scumbag.

Mrs. Vasquez Sr. was heartbroken, crying and wailing into the phone, “I don’t care! They did me a huge favor, and if you dare divorce her, I’ll hang myself tonight! You can come to the old house tomorrow and collect my body!”

Clearly livid, she slammed the phone down with a sharp crack.

Jonathan was used to this. He’d heard the boy cry wolf so many times he was immune.

Besides, his old mother threatened to hang herself eight or ten times a year. Not once was it real; it was just a tactic to scare him.

He’d grown up being scared like that.

Jonathan put his phone away and turned his head, his eyes meeting Stephanie's inquisitive gaze.

He frowned, unsure if she had overheard his conversation. Did she know he was technically “married”?

Jonathan’s brow furrowed, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes.

Stephanie poured a cup of tea, filling the one in front of Jonathan as well.

She had no reason to pry into his private life, but seeing his dark expression, she guessed he was troubled by matters of the heart.

He was arguing with his girlfriend, and she hoped the fallout wouldn't affect her.

Stephanie worried that in his anger, Jonathan might just abandon their business discussion altogether.

“Jonathan, here’s Meridian Consortium’s quarterly financial report. As you can see, we have no weaknesses in either R&D or marketing.”

She placed the folder on the table and pushed it toward him, hoping to divert his attention.
