Next Man, Better Plan novel Chapter 76

When Jonathan received the message, his expression instantly darkened.

He turned and shot a fierce glare at Steven. What the hell had this guy been telling Stephanie behind his back?

Abusive? What abuse?

Steven flinched, feeling a murderous aura wash over him, and instinctively shrank back.

He leaned closer to Jonathan. “Mr. Vasquez, do you have any instructions for me?”

Jonathan sneered, clapping a heavy hand on Steven’s shoulder. His voice was icy. “You’re so capable, who am I to give you instructions?”

Steven was completely bewildered. Jonathan never praised anyone like that. Hearing the grit in his voice, Steven’s knees felt weak, and he reflexively grabbed the table for support.

Jonathan tossed the phone to him and leaned back in his chair.

Steven caught the phone and saw the message Stephanie had sent a minute ago. He nearly dropped it on the floor.

Steven whispered in explanation, “Boss, I didn’t say anything.”

“Oh? Really? So she has a persecution complex? She just imagined that I’m abusive?”

Steven could clearly sense Jonathan’s interest in this Ms. Jackson, but he was also the one who had been screaming for a divorce just the other day…

To prevent this Ms. Jackson from being a gold-digger who refused to leave, and to ensure she would agree to the divorce and solve this “problem” for Jonathan quickly, Steven had naturally resorted to some tactics.

But judging by his boss’s reaction now, had he fallen for her?

Steven held the phone and typed: [You may have misunderstood. Mr. Vasquez would never be abusive. He's a very kind person, great to his subordinates, and even better to his wife.]

Reading the message, Stephanie felt as if the assistant had been taken hostage.

This message was clearly something Steven had been forced to write under duress from his boss.

Stephanie’s brow furrowed even deeper, and she mentally added “coerces subordinates” to her list of this “Mr. Vasquez’s” faults.
