Ethan's voice came through, instantly calming her nerves. "Are you home yet?"
"Just got downstairs." Dawn's gaze swept the area. That eerie feeling seemed to have disappeared. She got in the car and fastened her seatbelt, feeling like she could hear her own heart pounding. "What about you? Are you off yet?"
"Not yet."
Ethan sighed, his voice low as he called out, "Honey."
Dawn's heart tingled as she smiled and asked, "What is it?"
"I miss you."
Used to his sweet talk by now, Dawn felt her passion stirring. She hummed softly. "Then come home."
After a few more lovey-dovey exchanges, they hung up.
Dawn started the engine.
Suddenly, her movements froze.
She felt every pore tense up as she whipped her head around.
Across from her was only a weathered concrete pillar. Nothing else.
She let out a soft breath of relief and quickly drove away.
Not long after the white Maserati pulled out, a black figure gradually emerged from behind the pillar. The face was impossible to make out.
...
As soon as Ethan hung up, he grabbed his coat and stood up. Seeing him prepare to leave, Tony said in confusion, "Boss, Ms. West is coming over later."
"It's after hours. What's she coming here for?"
"She said she wanted to take you to dinner."
Ethan's movements paused. He narrowed his eyes. "And you agreed?"
Tony was speechless.
Well, you didn't say not to agree either.
Ethan gritted his teeth and laughed coldly. "Whoever agreed can go keep her company. Also, you're losing this month's bonus."
"Boss ... "
Ethan ignored him and walked into the elevator with his phone.
Tony's face fell miserably. He wanted to die. The boss just up and left like that. How was he supposed to explain this to that big shot?
In the elevator, Ethan had originally pressed the button for the parking garage.
Suddenly remembering something, he clicked his tongue in annoyance and pressed the button for the first floor instead.
Micah had just finished a game when he sensed something was off. He looked up to see the man striding toward him like a storm, looking ready to devour someone.
Oh no ...
"Ethan!"
He quickly stood up and backed away two steps. "Let's talk this out. All I did was play a game, Ethan!"
Ethan stopped and waited for him to finish before asking, "Getting off work?"
Micah didn't know what he meant and said, "Yeah, or not?"
Ethan smiled.
A vein throbbed at Ethan's temple. He gestured to him. "Come here."
"Uh."
Come over for what?
He wasn't stupid. This didn't look good. Come over to get beat up?
Micah pretended to sigh in disappointment. His delicate features couldn't hide his dejection as he lowered his head. "If that's how it is, forget it. I'll just go eat by myself."
"Well, that's not what I meant."
Roxanne explained awkwardly, "I made plans with Ethan. How about the three of us go together?"
Micah looked up. "No need for that. I just saw his wife come by. We shouldn't be third wheels. Come on, Roxanne, you're buying."
His smile was bright as sunshine, with no trace of his earlier dejection.
Before Roxanne had time to think about what was wrong with this picture, she was pulled into the car.
Micah left her no room to refuse.
Before long, Ethan received a text message. "It's all been settled."
He glanced at it and put his phone down, continuing to drive.
When he got home, Dawn was in the yard with Sunny. She was still wearing her work clothes, looking thin and delicate.
Ethan frowned and walked over to stand beside her. This position blocked the wind perfectly.
"Why didn't you put on a jacket before coming out?"
Dawn was panting from running around. She smiled at him. "I'm not cold. I'm even sweating.
"Sunny, over there!"
She threw the ball in her hand into the distance and watched Sunny dash after it.
Ethan took her hand and held it in his palm, rubbing it gently. "Still playing?"
Dawn shook her head. "Let's go eat first. Hannah already has dinner ready."
The two walked hand in hand toward the house. Sunny, who had retrieved the ball, chased after them.
