**Chapter 6**
Charlie stood there, momentarily frozen, the weight of Lola’s words hanging in the air like a heavy fog. Her sharp tongue had caught him off guard; he had never anticipated such a fierce retort from her. Yet, as the reality of their situation settled in, he reminded himself that she would be leaving with nothing—just a housewife stripped of her means. This thought softened some of his irritation, allowing him to hold his tongue and refrain from a biting comeback in the heat of the moment.
After signing the divorce papers, Lola gathered the remnants of her life from the Hudson estate. Each item she picked up felt like a piece of her past she was reluctantly letting go. As she stepped out of the grand house, she cast one last glance in the rearview mirror and caught sight of Rose. The woman wore a distant, triumphant smile that sent a chill down Lola’s spine. It was as if Rose was savoring a victory she had long desired. Lola’s skin crawled at the sight, and without a moment’s hesitation, she pressed down on the accelerator, eager to distance herself from a place filled with haunting memories.
As she drove, her mind raced with thoughts of what lay ahead. She needed to formulate a plan, a way to reclaim her life, but before she could gather her thoughts, the wailing of sirens pierced the air, sharp and urgent. Lola frowned, glancing in the mirror to see a police cruiser tailing her closely. Her heart raced as she instinctively slowed down, hoping to let the squad car pass. But in a shocking turn of events, the police vehicle surged forward, quickly boxing her in on all sides.
Confusion washed over her as she came to a halt, her breath quickening. She cracked the car door, ready to ask what was happening, but before she could utter a word, strong hands grabbed her and forced her face-down against the cold metal of the vehicle. The impact sent a jolt through her body as her cheek met the unforgiving surface, and she tasted the metallic sting of blood in her mouth. Panic surged within her; she struggled against the grip of the officer, but the strength of a trained man was too much for her.
With a swift motion, the officers flung open her trunk, their excitement palpable as they shouted, “The kid’s here!” The words echoed in her ears, confusion morphing into dread. One officer radioed the discovery, and moments later, they pulled out Edwin, a limp, sleeping form that sent her heart plummeting.
Her world shrank to a high-pitched ringing in her ears, drowning out everything else. How had her son ended up in her trunk? What kind of nightmare was unfolding?
As traffic slowed and curious onlookers clustered around, the atmosphere shifted. The sight of a child being pulled from a closed trunk ignited whispers that quickly morphed into accusations. Lola could hear the murmurings, each word a dagger aimed at her heart.
“Look at her. She acts like a proper lady, and then this?”
