**Across the Fallen Golden Kingdom Distant Fires by Damon S. Creed**
During the days that Chase found himself confined to the sterile, harshly lit hospital room, Nora made it a point to visit him not once, but twice. Each time, she brought Dominic along, a silent yet palpable presence beside her.
“Thank you for saving me,” she stated, her voice steady, a mixture of gratitude and resolve threading through her words. “Let’s be clear, Mr. Whitmore—your life is yours to live, and mine is no longer intertwined with it.”
Chase’s eyes, red-rimmed and filled with a mixture of pain and desperation, bore into her. He reached out, grasping her hand and pressing it against his chest, as if trying to anchor her to him. “Nora, I’m not well. The pain is overwhelming… Can’t you stay with me just a little longer?”
Dominic, unable to contain his frustration, swiftly slapped Chase’s hand away, the sound echoing in the small room like a thunderclap.
“Chase, we are grateful for what you did, but that doesn’t grant you the right to cling to her now. Have some dignity. She’s engaged to me now,” he asserted, his tone sharp and unyielding.
Chase’s laughter was cold, a bitter sound that seemed to slice through the tension in the air. “Even if you’re engaged to her, she will always be mine,” he retorted, his eyes glinting with a mixture of defiance and sorrow.
At that moment, it became clear that further conversation was futile.
Nora turned away, leaving the room with Dominic at her side. Just as they reached the entrance of the hospital, they unexpectedly collided with Camila.
Nora almost didn’t recognize the woman standing before her, her disheveled appearance a stark contrast to the polished persona she once knew. “What happened to you?” Nora asked, her voice tinged with genuine concern.
Camila, in a moment of utter despair, collapsed at Nora’s feet, her sobs echoing through the corridor like a haunting melody. “Chase is a monster! He threw me into a lake—I nearly drowned! He left me there to be bitten by snakes, then brought a group of men to… to assault me. I’m ruined! The doctors say I won’t live long… Nora, please, I’m begging you—help me get revenge!”
Nora looked down at her, her expression devoid of sympathy. “Wasn’t this exactly how you all treated me back then?”
“You want me to avenge you? Who avenged me?” Nora’s voice remained steady, but there was an unmistakable edge to it as she glanced at Dominic, who stood silently beside her.
“If kindness is repaid with hatred, what do we have left to repay kindness with?” she asked, her words hanging in the air like a dark cloud.
Camila froze, her pleas dying on her lips, stunned into silence by Nora’s unwavering resolve.
Without another word, Nora walked away, her back straight and unyielding.

Nora would never allow herself to feel pity for those who had once inflicted pain upon her. Sympathy was a luxury she could not afford, and forgiveness was a distant notion.
Whatever misfortune Camila was enduring now was a direct result of her own actions. The consequences of her downfall were hers alone to bear.
To show mercy to Camila at this juncture would be a betrayal to the girl who had nearly drowned in that lake all those years ago.
Nora quickened her pace, and Dominic found himself rushing to keep up with her determined stride.
“Nora, the situation at the Whitmore Group is dire. Chase’s injury has sent the board into a frenzy, circling like sharks sensing blood in the water.”
Nora nodded, her expression calm yet resolute. “Leaving Camila in a state of madness at the hospital entrance—that was already revenge enough for both him and the Whitmore Group.”
