**Across the Fallen Golden Kingdom Distant Fires by Damon S. Creed**
How could I have possibly foreseen that Ophelia would attempt to sell me?
I’m not some kind of oracle, after all.
I had meticulously considered every conceivable scenario, taking every precaution I could muster.
And yet—“Even if I had warned you about Ophelia’s intentions, would you have believed me?”
“Would you have taken the necessary steps to investigate her, limited her allowance, or even reported her to the authorities?”
My father and mother both averted their eyes, unable to meet my gaze.
“Just like with those cameras, you would have dismissed my concerns, claiming that Ophelia was merely acting out due to her own frustrations, that she wouldn’t truly harm me.”
They opened their mouths to speak but found themselves at a loss for words.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally broke the silence. “Evelyn, had we known what was happening, we would have never allowed you to be taken from us.”
The air in the room became heavy with unspoken words before my mother hesitated, her voice trembling as she continued, “Evelyn… Ophelia is still just a child. Perhaps you could write her a letter of forgiveness? I promise to guide her from now on…”
I chose silence in response, my gaze drifting past them to my adoptive parents, who stood nearby, their expressions filled with unwavering concern.
“Mom, Dad,” I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper, “let’s go home once I’m discharged from this hospital.”
At my words, my biological parents were taken aback, their faces a mixture of shock and desperation. They rushed to my bedside, panic evident in their eyes.
“Evelyn, what do you mean? You’re our daughter! How can you even consider going home with them?”
“Why can’t I?” I shot back coldly, locking eyes with them.
“When I returned, you didn’t immediately hold a welcome ceremony. You were testing me, weren’t you? You decided to celebrate with Ophelia on her birthday only after I proved myself worthy.”
“You can put me to the test, but I’m testing you as well. And now, I officially declare that you have failed my test. You do not deserve to be my parents.”
“I’ve made my decision to live with my adoptive parents.”

I pushed myself up from the bed, feeling a wave of dizziness wash over me, but I steadied myself, determined.
My biological parents stood directly in front of me, blocking my path like sentinels.
“What wrong have we committed? Since your return, we’ve provided you with the same allowance and room as Ophelia. We have never treated you unfairly!”
“But you haven’t treated me any better either. You’ve treated your long-lost daughter and the daughter of a woman who nearly took my life with the same indifference. Is that not unfair?”
My biological mother’s brow furrowed in confusion. “But we’ve shared over a decade of emotions with Ophelia. We couldn’t just cast her aside the moment you came back…”
I took a deep breath and slipped on the coat my adoptive mother had given me. “So, I have the right to make my own choices too.”
“Goodbye, Mr. Sullivan, Mrs. Sullivan.”
With my adoptive mother’s hand in mine, I walked calmly past them.
