Yvonne swore to herself—she honestly wasn’t in the habit of eavesdropping. She’d only come back to retrieve her phone, that was all.
But a sudden wave of anxiety crept over her.
The man in the office seemed to have a close relationship with Xenia. If he told Xenia what he’d just learned, that spoiled heiress would stop at nothing to investigate further.
And if she traced things back to Yvonne… The consequences were beyond anything Yvonne could predict.
Her heart thumped uneasily. She was about to slip away when she heard the man’s voice from inside again.
“Marico, Xenia’s done a lot for you. She went home in tears last night and begged me to explain everything to you. She loves you so much, that’s why she kissed someone else—she thought it was you.” Yves’s tone was full of sympathy.
Yvonne, overhearing this juicy tidbit, was ready to leave and come back for her phone later, but now she couldn’t help but listen in.
“Did you not understand me, or did you just not hear?” Marico’s patience was clearly gone. His eyes were sharp, his expression cold, with a dangerous edge in his voice.
He hated going over the same old nonsense—especially when it came to Xenia. He’d never paid her any real attention, no matter how hard she tried to get his notice. Honestly, he couldn’t even remember what she looked like.
Seeing Marico’s face grow even more forbidding, Yves finally dropped the subject. “Sorry, I was overstepping.”
“Take your watch and get out,” Marico said, his voice even icier.
Yves looked embarrassed, but did as he was told. He picked up the Rolex in its paper bag, turned on his heel, and left without another word.
The conversation inside ended so abruptly that Yvonne barely had time to react. She was still hovering near the office door when Yves walked out and nearly ran right into her.
The thought of being exposed terrified her. She was just an ordinary person, with no money, no connections, no power. If a spoiled, obsessive heiress like Xenia set her sights on her, Yvonne was sure she’d be eaten alive.
Marico’s breath caught, his eyebrows arching. “What exactly are you worried about?”
“I’m worried that if our relationship comes out, your admirers will come after me. I’m scared,” Yvonne confessed, her voice small.
Being married to Marico had its perks, sure. But the fear was just as real as any happiness.
She was just an average woman, who’d gotten a little too tipsy and reckless one night and rushed into signing that marriage certificate.
Now she was constantly on edge—even though they were legally married, she couldn’t help feeling like she’d stolen something that was never meant to be hers.
