“The boardroom. Everyone, meeting now.”
Yvonne was still floundering in a haze of embarrassment when Linda burst out of the director’s office, striding briskly into the open office and barking out the order to the staff.
Yvonne snapped back to herself, took a quick sip of water, grabbed her notebook, and stood up.
She joined the flow of colleagues heading toward the conference room.
Linda took her seat at the head of the table and got straight to the point.
“Our subsidiary’s new collaboration with Ms. White has officially launched, and the initial results have been excellent.
The recent event was also planned and executed by our department. You all performed exceptionally well, so the company has decided our strategy team will take on the subsequent promotion and coordination. This is the company’s most promising project for the future—so I suggest you make the most of this opportunity.”
Linda’s announcement left Grace slightly taken aback. “When did this come down? I didn’t see any notice.”
“For something this important, it’s not surprising you missed it—especially since you just got promoted to director.” Linda dismissed her with a wave, clearly not seeing Grace as her equal. “You’ll lead the team this time. Make sure everyone fully understands the project’s direction and possibilities.”
With that, she opened her laptop and brought up a PowerPoint presentation. “There’s another meeting this afternoon. The project leader, Mr. Jones, and the head designer will be there. But first, let me give you all a rundown of the project’s key points.”
Yvonne lifted her gaze to the screen.
Domestically, the renewable energy sector was booming, but the nation’s progress was being throttled by a lack of access to foreign-made microchips. The breakthroughs made by Xenia’s lab had sent shockwaves through the entire industry.
Even if it was just a modest step forward, it still put them far ahead of anyone else in the country.
What Yvonne couldn’t quite figure out was this: After Xenia had been disfigured, Marico hadn’t shown her any special consideration, yet she was still willing to commit to a long-term partnership with the Hamilton Group.
That woman had a core of steel.
Yvonne hadn’t expected the partnership to happen so suddenly. Thinking it over, she realized Xenia probably wouldn’t attend the meeting—she was still in the hospital, recovering from her injuries.
…
Lunch came and went. After an hour’s break, Yvonne’s entire team got ready and set out for the subsidiary’s offices for an interdepartmental meeting.
They were greeted by Mr. Jones—the same man who’d hosted the last event. But this time, someone else was standing beside him, and Yvonne’s eyes widened in surprise.
Tracy!
Dressed in a sharp black-and-white business outfit, a fitted blouse and short skirt with sheer black tights, she looked more like she was headed for a photo shoot than a day at the office.
Yvonne remembered how Tracy had made a point of getting Mr. Jones’s contact information at the last event. Looking at them now, she couldn’t help but wonder if Tracy hadn’t already reeled him in.
