Oops I Banged the CEO novel Chapter 28

The moment those words were spoken, it was like a grenade had gone off in the middle of the room—a thunderclap out of nowhere.

The entire Zade family was shell-shocked.

Gina hadn’t expected her son-in-law to be so utterly unreasonable. Her expression soured instantly.

“Yvonne, look at you—”

“Mom, that’s just how he is. Sure, he’s not rich, but he treats me well. You can stop worrying.” Yvonne cut her mother off without missing a beat. “And besides, I’ve fulfilled your family’s wishes—I’m married now, aren’t I?”

Everyone here was after money, plain and simple. Rather than stay on the defensive, Yvonne figured she’d let Marico fight fire with fire.

If you want poison, you get poison.

“I’ve never seen anyone so shameless about living off a woman,” someone muttered.

“You have no right to judge him,” Yvonne shot back. “At least he bought me a car. What about you? Have you ever bought my mom so much as a dress? Hm?”

She stood up for Marico in front of everyone.

Marico reached over and gently smoothed her messy hair, looking every bit the man determined to stick by her side, no matter what anyone said.

The Zades were completely thrown off balance.

They couldn’t out-muscle him, and they certainly couldn’t out-bully him.

And to make matters worse, Yvonne was siding with an outsider.

“That’s not how this works,” someone snapped. “Your mother is still here—she raised you, took care of you. You owe her a dowry. If you don’t want it, fine, but it goes to your mom. Fifty grand, and don’t even think about any extras.”

Yvonne shrugged. “Well, there’s nothing more I can do. I’m already married. If you’re so interested in selling your daughter off, why not introduce her to that guy from yesterday? They’d be a perfect match.”

She didn’t want to stay a second longer. Grabbing Marico’s hand, she stood up.

“Let’s go.”

“Yeah, my credit card’s maxed out. I’m counting on her to help me out,” Tracy chimed in, panic creeping into her voice.

Yvonne had always been their personal ATM. Even if she was leaving, they were determined to squeeze one last payout from her.

Gina sat silently in the corner, not daring to breathe too loudly.

In the elevator, Yvonne felt like she’d just clawed her way out of hell—her nerves raw, her whole body aching.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming back?” Marico’s voice was low, ice-edged with accusation.

If he hadn’t seen her messages today, if he’d been just a minute later, who knows what those people would have done to her.

“I didn’t want to trouble you,” Yvonne replied softly, her voice heavy with sadness.

Seeing her keep him at arm’s length like that, Marico’s frustration boiled over. He yanked off his tie, his words a mix of anger and something gentler: “If you can’t lean on me, who can you lean on?”

“I was afraid you’d be ashamed of my family,” Yvonne whispered. Tears fell, splashing onto the elevator floor.
