“I’ll go with you tonight,” Grace offered, her tone confident as always. As Yvonne’s supervisor, she took the lead. “There’s no way around it—these work events always involve drinks and schmoozing.”
Yvonne nodded, feeling a bit more at ease knowing Grace would be there. “Alright.”
“Let’s get started then,” Yvonne said, flipping open her laptop and diving into her work, hoping to lose herself in the daily grind and push aside her worries.
Just before noon, her phone wouldn’t stop buzzing with notifications.
She glanced at the screen. All the messages were from Marico, asking what she wanted for lunch and if she wanted to eat together upstairs.
He’d sent three texts in a row. Yvonne replied to just one: “Having lunch with coworkers.”
As she exited the chat, she noticed a new friend request. The message was simple: “It’s me. Adding you again.”
She hesitated for a moment, then accepted.
A new message from Marico popped up immediately: “If it’s inconvenient talking on the other account, just use this one.”
Yvonne replied, “Okay.”
And that was it.
She stayed focused on work, not replying further. In her mind, someone like Marico—who probably made a fortune every minute—shouldn’t be bothered with idle chat. Better to concentrate on her tasks.
After a busy morning, she finally found a moment to breathe and made herself a cup of tea.
As she stepped out of the break room, she saw Marico approaching the elevator.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, exuding understated elegance. The memory of her fastening his shirt buttons for him that morning flashed in her mind, making the moment feel almost surreal. Other than being caught a little off guard, Yvonne felt nothing else.
Marico spotted her, his deep, steady gaze meeting her bright, clear eyes. For a brief moment, silence spoke volumes between them.
Other colleagues passing by greeted Marico with polite hellos.
He nodded in response, but his gaze remained fixed on Yvonne.
Linda, hearing the commotion from her office, hurried out with a file in hand. “Mr. Hamilton, what brings you down here in person? I was just about to bring these documents up to your office.”
Linda’s sudden appearance made Marico finally look away.
