Yvonne hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she decided to let it go. She clutched her clothes and wriggled under the covers, getting dressed as discreetly as possible.
Marico watched the lump in the sheets with an amused, leisurely gaze. The corners of his mouth curled up as he let out a low chuckle.
“Breakfast is ready. The chef’s finished everything up. Can you get out of bed, or should I carry you?” he teased.
Before he finished speaking, Yvonne had already emerged from beneath the covers, fully dressed. Her delicate face was flushed with a mix of shyness and annoyance.
“I can do it myself, thank you very much!” she announced, determined to prove her independence.
But the second her foot touched the floor and she tried to stand, her knees buckled and she collapsed—only saved from hitting the carpet by Marico’s quick reflexes.
That aching weakness in her legs! Worse than the first time…
“Maybe you should call in sick and rest at home today?” Marico suggested, cradling her gently against his chest, his deep voice tinged with indulgent concern.
“I can’t keep calling in every other day. People will talk,” Yvonne grumbled, her lips pressed into a stubborn line. She shot Marico a glance, but her bravado melted under his gaze.
She wanted to protest, but didn’t dare voice it out loud.
“From now on, I’m not drinking anymore. And you’re not allowed to be so rough,” she muttered, trying to bargain.
“When was I ever rough with you?” Marico’s dark eyes narrowed, searching hers with a depth that made her blush.
“You were last night… I couldn’t handle it, and you just—” Yvonne’s voice trailed off, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. Even her tongue felt hot as she spoke.
Marico’s smile deepened. “Alright, blame me.”
She huffed, but didn’t really mean it. With everything between them—their identities, their complicated relationship—how could she really blame him?
Marico saw right through her, reading the nervous caution in her every move, the way she deferred to his authority.
