Vague rumors were enough to thrust Yvonne into the spotlight, setting off a wave of curiosity throughout the entire company.
People are naturally drawn to gossip, and with hundreds of employees in the company’s group chat, everyone was now eager to know: who exactly was this colleague who’d caught the eye—and public affection—of a major partner?
It was still early, before the official workday began, but already the chat was blowing up—unread messages piling up past ninety-nine in minutes.
Yvonne rarely checked the company-wide chat, but word traveled fast. Nydia, who seemed to know everyone, received a screenshot from another department, asking about Yvonne.
“Yvonne, check the company chat! Linda’s saying that Mr. Reed is pursuing you!” Nydia sounded both excited and incredulous.
That was how Yvonne first learned she and Mr. Reed had been tangled together in the rumor mill.
“There’s no way Yvonne would be interested in someone like Mr. Reed!” Grace had seen the message too and jumped in to defend her.
She even added a sly laugh emoji and typed: “I was at the dinner last night too. Didn’t see Mr. Reed giving Yvonne any special attention—if anything, he seemed more impressed with you, Director Linda.”
Linda, reclining smugly in her hospital bed, was savoring the drama she’d stirred up. But when she saw Grace’s message, her expression soured.
Linda scrambled to reply: “Yvonne was drinking last night, and halfway through, Mr. Reed personally drove her home. Neither of them were around for the second half of the dinner. With how quickly that contract was signed, Yvonne must’ve made quite an impression—with her charm.”
That message sent the chat into overdrive.
Yvonne’s hands trembled with anger as she read it.
It was obvious Linda was fanning the flames, insinuating that she and Mr. Reed had something going on—and perhaps more than just business.
Yvonne closed her eyes, took a deep breath to steady herself, then turned to Grace. “Could you help me distribute all those flowers to everyone?”
“Of course,” Grace replied, and Nydia stepped in to help as well.
Yvonne herself placed the fifty-two red roses in Linda’s office, right next to her framed professional portrait, and snapped a photo for good measure.
Stepping back into the hallway, she saw colleagues everywhere with bouquets of red roses in their hands or on their desks.
