"If you're planning to save Lucian based on the other party's demand of fifty billion, I'll do everything in my power to assist you... As for the company, if you truly intend to take action, I won't oppose it."
If it really came down to fifty billion, then Lamari would likely be lost.
However, Stefan also understood the gravity of the situation. Despite the reluctance in his heart, he knew this was the only way forward. After all, they could always rebuild in the future.
Hearing these words, Lambert's expression finally shifted. He slowly raised his head, looked at Stefan, and said in a measured tone, "Thank you, Stefan."
Stefan rolled his eyes and chuckled, "What kind of relationship do we have? No need for thanks. Your main task now is to find my godson."
Lambert's eyes narrowed slightly as he said, "Stefan, I need your help with something."
Stefan knew Lambert was getting serious, so his expression turned solemn. "Alright, go ahead."
Lambert met his gaze and said, "Keep an eye on the first and second branches of the Stone family... and your brother, Jerold."
Stefan was momentarily stunned. "Jerold?" It made sense to monitor the Stone family's branches, but why Jerold? Stefan wasn't suspicious; he was just genuinely confused. What was the significance of this? Could it be that Jerold was somehow involved in Lucian's disappearance?
But that didn't make sense... What connection did Jerold have with Lambert? There were no business or personal ties between them. Stefan felt utterly perplexed.
Lambert glanced at him and said, "Just keep an eye on him. That's all."
Having been brothers with Lambert for so many years, Stefan, though unclear about the specifics, nodded in agreement, signaling his full support. Lambert then went on to mention a few other people and matters to be cautious of, to which Stefan nodded in acknowledgment.
After that, the two divided their tasks and began their respective efforts.
Only after Stefan left the office did a faint coldness flicker in Lambert's eyes.
After a brief pause, Lambert picked up his phone and dialed a number. Once the call connected, he spoke directly, "Please inform the Vice Mayor that Lambert has a matter he needs to discuss with him."
...
At the Stone family's main residence, Old Mr. Stone was, as usual, in his study. The heads of the first, second, and third branches were all present. They stood quietly, unsure of the reason their father had summoned them. Unlike the visibly distracted Hugh, the eldest and second uncles exchanged several glances in the middle of the room, seemingly communicating something through their eyes. After about five minutes, the old man finally spoke, "We must still save Lucian."
Hugh immediately breathed a sigh of relief; his eyes filled with gratitude and excitement as he looked at his father.
However, the second uncle was not pleased. Of course, he didn't show his displeasure or disagreement openly. Instead, he tactfully said, "Father, this is fifty billion we're talking about. Not to mention whether we can manage the cash flow, even if we do, if any future projects require capital, the Stone Group, already drained of funds, could face a liquidity crisis. This could severely impact the company. Father, it's not that Brother and I don't want to save Lucian, but isn't there another way? Fifty billion is a huge amount!"
While the old man didn't seem to mind, the second uncle was clearly distressed.
The eldest uncle, who had initially intended to remain silent, was now compelled to speak since his brother had involved him. "I think what my brother says makes sense... but we really can't abandon Lucian."
This statement caused the second uncle to frown. He hadn't expected his elder brother to say such a thing; he thought they were on the same page in opposing the rescue.
Old Mr. Stone glanced at each of them in turn before finally declaring, “Enough. I’ve made my decision. The Stone family will contribute forty billion. As for the remaining ten billion, Hugh, you and Lambert will have to figure it out yourselves.” After careful consideration, Old Mr. Stone concluded this was the only feasible solution.
After all, the Stone family’s wealth didn’t belong to any single individual, and withdrawing such a massive sum from the family coffers was indeed inappropriate.
Especially since…
Little Lucian might already be dead.
He was just a baby, after all.
So, Old Mr. Stone was essentially spending fifty billion for an uncertain outcome. Yet, considering how much he had doted on Lucian, he couldn’t bring himself to abandon the boy. Still, this was the extent of what he could do. In other families, such an act would be almost unheard of.
After all, who would be willing to part with such a fortune for the sake of a child?
A child whose future remained uncertain.
Old Mr. Stone felt he had done his part as a great-grandfather.
Hugh glanced up at his father’s stern and icy expression. Clenching his fists, he lowered his voice and said, “Yes, I understand.” He knew this was his father’s greatest concession. There was no room for further requests. His father had his own struggles, and now Hugh would have to discuss how to raise the remaining ten billion with Lambert.
