The Kendrick Residence...
After countless rejections from Stefan, Lexi's expression grew increasingly sour.
She had done everything she could to show her sincerity—apologizing over and over again—yet Stefan still stubbornly held a grudge. It irritated her, though deep down, a strange sweetness lingered. Maybe he was just this upset because he cared so much... The thought softened her anger slightly.
Silently, she glanced at her phone, resolving to slowly make it up to him. She was confident they could return to how things used to be.
As for that Allison?
Just a pawn in a business marriage alliance, utterly beneath her notice.
The thought lifted her mood. With a leisurely motion, she picked up her phone and prepared to leave. While finishing her studies abroad was one reason for her return, the biggest reasons were Stefan—and... Jane. Her close friend from school. Though their backgrounds were worlds apart, Lexi had grown deeply sympathetic after learning about Jane’s struggles living under someone else’s roof.
Eventually, they became friends.
Before leaving, Jane had confided that she wanted to return to visit her uncle and aunt—the only parents she had ever known. But fearing her venomous cousin might harm her again, she had begged Lexi to come to her rescue if she didn’t return in time.
Lexi had been heartbroken at the time.
But Jane had been adamant, and in the end, Lexi had let her go.
Now, after weeks of silence, Lexi knew something had gone wrong. Sure enough, upon investigating, she discovered the truth—Jane had been imprisoned!
The news infuriated her, making her believe that Jane's cousin was downright malicious.
What made it even worse was that Jane’s cousin was actually close friends with Stefan’s current wife, which only deepened Lexi’s disgust.
Slowly descending the stairs, Lexi decided to head straight to the prison to visit Jane—and figure out a way to get her out.
But luck seemed to be against her. The moment she reached the bottom of the stairs, she ran straight into Tina, who had just returned. Tina Kendrick was her half-sister—though her name sounded sweet, her personality was anything but. Cold and aloof toward everyone, she harbored a particular disdain for her younger half-sister, and the feeling was entirely mutual.
Normally, the two would pass each other without so much as a glance, avoiding any interaction.
But this time, Tina spoke up.
And her very first sentence struck a nerve.
"I heard you’ve been chasing after Stefan from the Morris Group lately," she said, her voice dripping with icy mockery. "A word of advice—don’t follow in your mother’s footsteps. Stefan is a married man with a son. I may not like you, but I don’t want the Kendrick family’s reputation tarnished because of you. Try to behave yourself."
Lexi’s expression darkened instantly, her eyes blazing with fury as if she could burn a hole through Tina with her glare.
Tina merely smirked at her reaction. "What? You dare to do it but can’t take the criticism? Should I tell Dad what you’ve been up to since coming back?"
Lexi’s face paled.
The driver froze.
Lexi’s irritation flared. "What? Are you deaf?"
The driver quickly snapped out of his daze and stammered an apology, not daring to ask anything else. He started the engine, though resentment flickered in his eyes. He knew Lexi had always been like this, but sometimes, he just couldn’t stand it.
Even when he drove the mayor around, the man never treated him with such disdain.
No wonder everyone said the Second Miss paled in comparison to the Eldest Miss.
When the car arrived at the prison gates, Lexi got out.
The driver remained inside, waiting.
Lexi hadn’t given any prior notice for this visit, so when she demanded to see an inmate, the guards were taken aback. After all, visitation required proper procedures—family or friends couldn’t just waltz in unannounced.
Already in a terrible mood, Lexi let out a cold laugh and made a call to someone.
Moments later, the prison guards received orders from above to arrange the visitation for Miss Lexi Kendrick.
Realizing she must be someone important, the guards swallowed their displeasure at her attitude and complied without protest.
