Lexi's expression darkened instantly at the blunt remark.
Her eyes turned icy as she glared at the staff member from Lamari Group. "What exactly do you mean by that?" she demanded.
The female assistant replied impassively, "I meant nothing by it. It's just that President Morris is extremely busy. Without a prior appointment, you'll simply have to wait."
Lexi let out a cold laugh. "I've never needed an appointment to see Stefan. Just tell him my name, and that's enough."
The assistant remained unruffled. "I'm sorry, but we must follow protocol. Please come back next time with an appointment. Thank you."
In truth, she had already reported her name. If this woman were truly someone known to President Morris or President Stone, they would have recognized her immediately. But the dismissive tone in President Stone's response made it clear that this "Miss Lexi Kendrick" was of no importance.
Still, to avoid causing trouble for President Morris, she simply insisted on following procedure.
No one could find fault with that.
Lexi was practically seething with rage!
Never in her life had she been treated with such disrespect! With a disdainful snort, she pulled out her phone and dialed Stefan's number. His old number had long been changed—this new one had taken her considerable effort to obtain. Without hesitation, she made the call.
At that moment, Stefan was still in Lambert's office. Seeing the unfamiliar number flash on his screen, he instinctively moved to answer.
Lambert stopped him.
Stefan frowned in confusion, his eyes filled with silent questions.
Lambert looked at him as if he were an idiot. "If I had to guess, that's probably your ex-girlfriend calling."
Though he didn’t know Lexi well, he had heard of her.
And he had seen her a few times before.
You can tell a person's character from their behavior. He guessed that the call must be from the mayor's daughter. As for how she got his phone number—well, that wasn’t exactly surprising.
Stefan paused for a moment before responding irritably, "Ex-girlfriend? We were never even in a relationship! If you dare say that in front of my wife, you're dead. I’ll make sure to spill every single one of your past misdeeds in front of Ariana so she knows exactly what kind of man she married."
The moment those words left his mouth, Lambert smirked—a dangerous, icy glint flashing in his eyes. His tone was deadly serious as he met Stefan’s gaze. "Go ahead. Try it."
Stefan shivered involuntarily.
He huffed under his breath, thinking, 'It was just a joke—no need to take it so seriously…'
Of course, he didn’t answer the call. Lexi was a problem he couldn’t deal with right now, so avoiding her was his only option. But if she kept pushing his patience, he wouldn’t hold back for much longer.
The phone rang for a long time, unanswered.
Lexi finally realized he might actually be in a meeting with his phone on silent. Still, she called again. When no one picked up this time either, she angrily shut off her phone and tossed it into her bag.
By then, the female assistant had already gone upstairs—she had no time to waste on someone so insignificant.
Especially when the other woman had the audacity to act like she had every right to do so.
Realizing Lexi was heading straight for them, neither Allison nor Ariana backed down. They weren’t the type to shrink from confrontation—after all, they weren’t the ones with a guilty conscience or a lack of morals.
Lexi stopped in front of them, her smile sharp and insincere. "Oh? What’s this? Miss Jay, here to see Stef?"
Allison’s expression remained icy. "No. I’m here to see my husband."
As expected, Lexi's expression twisted for a split second.
She took a deep breath, deliberately avoiding Allison's gaze, and turned directly to Ariana with a forced smile. "Miss White, what a coincidence running into you again today."
Ariana replied coolly, "Indeed."
Lexi pressed on, her tone saccharine, "I visited Jane this morning."
Ariana's eyes flickered imperceptibly, while Allison's temper flared. She was utterly disgusted by Lexi's antics. If this woman had a grudge, she should take it up with her—why drag Ariana into it? What a lunatic!
Sensing Allison's barely contained fury, Ariana subtly tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to stay calm. Then, with an icy smile, she addressed Lexi. "So? Did you come just to inform me of that?" Her voice dripped with mock politeness. "It’s perfectly normal for close friends to visit inmates. But I fail to see why you felt the need to tell *me*."
Lexi smirked. "Oh, you *really* don’t understand? How... enlightening." Her voice turned venomous. "As Jane’s own sister, you’ve never once visited her in prison. Yet she adored you like family. And now look where she’s ended up—how tragic, to be betrayed by people as heartless as you. Some justice the heavens serve, don’t you think, *Miss White*?"
Her words hung in the air, sharp as a blade.
