Even the Eldest Uncle couldn't help but furrow his brows.
Khloe allowed a faint smirk to tug at the corner of her lips before swiftly schooling her expression into one of distress. Without missing a beat, she recounted the entire incident of Beverly poisoning Alvin some time ago, sparing no detail.
By the time she finished, both Khloe and her husband had turned ashen.
Aster studied their reactions before feigning sorrow. "Ah, it's my fault for failing to discipline my daughter-in-law properly. That's why she and Beverly dared to do such a thing. Thankfully, it was discovered early, and little Alvin wasn't seriously harmed... though his health has been left somewhat fragile. Poor child."
Khloe's face darkened with fury. "I always knew that Beverly was no good, despite her noble upbringing. I'll go straight to the Lawrence family and demand an explanation!"
Aster quickly interjected, "But Beverly is already in prison... Sister-in-law, even if you confront the Lawrence Family, they'll likely just offer empty apologies at best."
Khloe scoffed. "So you're suggesting I just let them off the hook? Beverly's imprisonment is what she deserves! But the Lawrence family is just as responsible. If they hadn't raised such a viper and deliberately married her off to our Arnold, my poor grandson would never have suffered like this! How heartless—even her own son wasn't spared!"
Eldest Uncle's face twisted with rage as well.
Second Uncle chimed in, attempting to mediate.
Once the tension had simmered long enough, Second Uncle and his wife exchanged glances before speaking carefully. "Sister-in-law, now isn't the time for this. Beverly was willing to harm little Alvin just to sabotage the third branch, and she even dragged Gwen into it, making our second branch look terrible in the process. Now, Third Brother and his wife barely visit anymore—it's clear there's a rift between us..."
Aster's implication was clear: the second branch had already alienated the third branch, and with Beverly's actions against Alvin, they had further provoked Lambert and his wife.
The resentment had only deepened.
Though the couple had returned, living peacefully from now on seemed impossible.
For all they knew, Lambert was already plotting his revenge.
At the thought, Khloe and Eldest Uncle's expressions grew even grimmer—
They no longer dared to underestimate their nephew Lambert. His methods were truly formidable. Having only just managed to return to the Stone family, if Lambert used this as an excuse for retaliation, their stay in the household might not last long. Soon enough, he might find a way to convince Old Mr. Stone to exile their branch of the family abroad again.
That was entirely possible.
Seeing the expressions of the couple shift uneasily, Aster and her husband knew their words had struck a chord.
Seizing the moment, Aster pressed on, "So, Elder Brother and Sister-in-law, what's done is done. Now, we're all in the same boat—if one falls, the rest follow. Surely, clever people like you understand the principle of 'when the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold.'"
The eldest uncle fell silent.
Khloe wanted to speak, but seeing her husband hold his tongue, she bit back her words with visible effort.
After a pause, the elder uncle narrowed his eyes and said coolly, "So, what exactly do you and Second Brother propose?" He wasn’t a fool—he knew the second branch had their own motives for bringing this up.
But the situation was exactly as Aster had described.
They were all tied to the same fate now.
A faint smirk curled Aster’s lips as she addressed Khloe and her elder brother-in-law. "Naturally, our two branches must stand united. Only then can the third branch be kept at bay. If we remain divided, we’ll end up just like before—completely defenseless against that brat Lambert’s schemes."
He exchanged a glance with his wife before turning back to his brother. "Fine. If our two branches unite, even Lambert wouldn’t dare make a move. If he really tries anything, Old Mr. Stone won’t be pleased." After all, while a decisive heir was desirable, one who showed no mercy to his own kin was downright terrifying.
Who knew if such a man might destroy the entire family in a fit of rage?
The Old Mr. Stone’s chosen successor had to be capable, yes.
But above all else, he had to ensure the Stone family’s survival.
He could tolerate ruthless ambition in the struggle for power, but he would never allow a bloodthirsty tyrant to take the helm.
And so, the two branches formed a tentative alliance—for now.
Khloe let out a subtle sigh of relief.
Though she wasn’t particularly fond of this sister-in-law, having this safeguard in place meant the main branch of the family would likely stay out of trouble in the future. After all, the two branches were intertwined—if one faced trouble, the other wouldn’t stand idly by.
With that, she felt much more at ease.
Once the serious matters were settled, Khloe’s thoughts drifted to her poor grandson.
Her lips pressed together slightly before she spoke again. "By the way, Aster, you mentioned Alvin isn’t doing well health-wise? What exactly is wrong? Will those toxins have any lasting effects on him?" With Arnold having only this one son now, she was determined to protect her sole grandson at all costs.
Aster shook her head. "I’m not entirely sure. The doctor only shared the details with Mother. You’ll have to ask her about it yourself, Sister-in-law."
