Despite the waiter’s harsh urging, Aurelia didn’t seem to hear him; she didn’t move a muscle.
Her gaze dropped to her own janitor’s uniform, then lifted to Aubrey’s expensive clothes. A look of twisted hatred contorted her face. She threw the rag to the floor and stormed toward Aubrey.
The omega waiter serving their table jumped in to block her, but Aubrey simply said, “It’s fine. Let her come.”
Only then did Aurelia rush forward.
Having been stopped for that brief second, her initial blaze of fury seemed to cool just enough. She didn’t dare flip the table. Instead, she hissed through gritted teeth.
“Aubrey! Did you come here just to laugh at me?! I’m telling you, Bailey will be here to get me soon! And Hudson! The moment he’s better, he’ll come for me, too! Don’t you get too comfortable!”
Alpha Henry frowned but remained silent. Aubrey, however, stirred her spoon with one hand and propped her chin up with the other.
“I haven’t said a thing,” she said with a small smile. “What are you trying so hard to prove?”
A Hudson? Ha. He’ll be spending the rest of his life in prison. A werewolf who betrays his pack loses his freedom forever. He’ll be left to repent under the daily lash of a wolfsbane whip.”
Hudson was the one who had worked with Killa to try and capture her. Even though the Kajit virus crisis had erupted immediately after, forcing them to focus on the antidote, it hadn’t stopped Hudson’s arrest.
After he was caught, even Charles hadn’t pleaded for him. An act like that was nothing short of betraying the Shadowmoon Pack.
While Henry hadn’t made a public announcement, rumors had already spread that a werewolf from the Lin family had betrayed the pack and the alpha. In an instant, the Lin family was ruined. Only Charles was left, still clinging to the last shreds of his reputation.
Aubrey knew Aurelia was aware of this. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be scrubbing floors here.
Sure enough, Aubrey’s words made Aurelia’s face drain of all color. The next second, her eyes went bloodshot and her fangs bared. She was clearly about to lunge.

But just as quickly, she reined in her transformation, dropped to the floor, and started wailing.
“Everyone, come and look! Aubrey is using her power to bully me! She’s beating her stepmother!”
“What is going on here?!”
The restaurant manager rushed over. When he saw one of his janitors making a scene with a customer–and seeing that those customers were the alpha and Aubrey–he nearly had a heart attack.
He spun on the stunned waiter. “What are you standing there for? Get her out of here!”
As the waiter tried to drag Aurelia away, she fought back, shrieking even louder.
“Everyone, look! The great healer is beating her stepmother! Come and see! Aubrey is an ungrateful wretch, beating her stepmother! If it wasn’t for me paying for her education, she’d be nothing today!”
Her screams drew the attention of nearly every customer in the restaurant.
Alpha Henry’s gaze swept the room, his face dark with impatience. He unleashed his alpha aura. Aurelia was instantly silenced, as if choked.
But even without a voice, she kept pounding the floor, putting on a desperate show of someone who had been horribly wronged. Her entire act was meant to scream one thing: Aubrey is an ungrateful monster!
Just as the waiter was about to haul Aurelia out, Aubrey called, “Wait.”
The waiter froze and glanced at Alpha Henry. When the alpha nodded, he let her go.
Aubrey walked over to Aurelia, looking down at the woman collapsed on the floor. She felt a complicated mix of emotions.
For so long, this vicious woman had been the monster under her bed–the one who had beaten. her, abused her, tried to steal her gift, and forced her to be a stepping stone for Bailey. But now, she was no longer a source of fear. Aubrey had to admit, most days, she even forgot this woman existed at all.
She stared at Aurelia for a long moment as a simple truth crystalized in her mind.
The best defense is a good offense.
