Alpha Henry’s brow furrowed deeply as his eyes locked with Mateo’s, the tension between the two Alphas palpable in the air. Their powerful auras clashed, evenly matched, creating a silent standoff that neither seemed willing to break.
Charles, unable to join the silent duel, focused instead on the carrier cradled in his arms. Inside, Candy lay quietly, her wide eyes fixed unblinkingly on Aubrey, who rested on the hospital bed. After a brief pause, Charles carefully unzipped the carrier. Candy sprang out instantly, her small form darting around the room before leaping gracefully onto the bed. She pressed her soft head against Aubrey’s cheek and emitted a gentle, comforting “Meow.”
Both Alpha Henry and Mateo glanced down at the cat, their expressions softening ever so slightly. It was clear they both understood just how much Aubrey cherished Candy’s presence.
“Ahem…” A light cough interrupted the moment.
From the doorway, Jax appeared, awkwardly rubbing his hands together as he stepped inside. “I came to check on Aubrey,” he said, his voice tinged with nervousness.
He hadn’t expected to find three male werewolves gathered here—two dominant Alphas and a beta well-known among the she-wolves. The atmosphere felt charged, almost uncomfortable. Jax shifted on his feet, rubbing his hands again. “Alpha, since you’re here, I feel relieved. I’ll just head back then…”
“Wait.” Alpha Henry’s voice cut through the air, stopping Jax in his tracks. The younger man looked up, startled, his eyes widening.
“You can call me Henry,” the Alpha said, his tone surprisingly casual. “Like my mother does.”
Mateo quickly followed suit. “And you can call me Mateo.”
Charles nodded simply. “Charles.”
In the back of Alpha Henry’s mind, his wolf, Callen, grumbled, “A bunch of copycats.”
Jax, who was over fifty, immediately recognized the unspoken truth: all three men were interested in his daughter, Aubrey. Yet, his gaze lingered on Charles with suspicion. What was someone from the Lynn family doing here, stirring up trouble? Especially when his daughter clearly favored the Alpha.
Fixing Charles with a sharp look, Jax then offered a polite smile to Mateo before turning back to Henry. “Alpha, why don’t you get some rest? Now that I’m here, I can watch over Aubrey.” He hesitated, unwilling to use Henry’s first name just yet.
For a moment, Alpha Henry studied him, his brows knitting together. The weight of the Alpha’s gaze pressed down on Jax, making him swallow hard. “…Uh, Henry…” he stammered, struggling to keep his composure.
