Helena had never imagined she'd run into Annie in such a cheap place.
The Stewards had deeper pockets than the Frosts, so Sean marrying Annie would bring him immense benefits.
Helena preferred having Annie as her daughter-in-law, but even if Sean and Annie never got married, having Annie hopelessly in love with Sean would still be advantageous for the Frosts.
"What a coincidence, Ann."
Helena gracefully strolled over, leading a group of wealthy ladies. She affectionately took Annie's hand and gave her a long, concerned once-over.
"Why have you lost so much weight, sweetheart? Haven't you been eating your meals?
"Sean can be thoughtless, so let me apologize on his behalf. Don't take it to heart because young couples can fight all the time."
Behind her, one of the wealthy ladies immediately chimed in, "She's right, Ann. Helena treats you like her own daughter."
Another laughed. "Men slip up sometimes, so be more forgiving and let it slide. Women get through marriages by swallowing a little grievance."
A third woman nodded along. "Exactly. Just bear with it a little, and it'll pass."
Each seemingly caring word was a calculated attempt to drag Annie back into the same pit she'd just climbed out of.
Deep down, she laughed. If Sean was the king of emotional manipulation, Helena was the founding ancestor.
In her past life, it was Helena, disguising all her schemes as care and love, who had lured Annie into a perfect housewife prison.
"A woman needs a family of her own, Ann. Sean feels bad for you since you have such a stressful job, so why don't you quit, stay home, and focus on getting pregnant? Give him a healthy baby boy.
"Don't worry. With me around, the Frost family is your home. No one would dare mistreat you."
Annie had been utterly foolish to believe that Helena had her best interests at heart, so she'd willingly given up her career to be a housewife.
In the end, all she received was betrayal and the loss of an innocent life.
In her new life, she vowed not to let any of them go, or leave any debts unpaid.
Annie's eyes welled up with tears. As if she'd suffered a wounded grievance, she sobbed out, "It isn't my fault, Mrs. Frost! Sean is incompetent!
"I-I can't possibly live like a widow for the rest of my life, so I had no choice but to call off the engagement!"
Her words seemed to plunge the place into silence.
The expressions on the wealthy ladies' faces were quite a sight to behold. As they exchanged glances, their eyes were lit up with the thrill of an impending gossip.
Was Sean, the second son of the Frosts and chief of the Cardiac Surgery Department in Jynston General Hospital, impotent?
Helena's face flushed a deep, purplish red. Trembling with rage, she shed all pretense and jabbed a finger in Annie's face. "How dare you spout such nonsense!
