When Annie and Christian stepped out of the ward, the hallway was silent.
She finally decided that she couldn't hold it in any longer and stopped in her tracks. With her head bowed, she softly murmured, "I'm sorry."
Christian looked down at the soft crown of her hair and calmly said, "It's fine."
He stepped closer and leaned down until his gaze aligned with hers. Word by word, he uttered, "Ann, all that matters is that you remember who your husband is."
She froze.
While she was at a loss, a nurse hurriedly approached. "Are you Mrs. Steward Senior's family? Dr. Carrington would like to meet you in his office."
Annie's heart lurched again as she immediately nodded. "We'll be right there."
As Christian tightened his grip on her hand, the warmth of his palm radiated toward her in waves.
…
Malcolm Carrington's office was heavy with tension. He adjusted his glasses and pushed a report toward them before gravely announcing, "Mrs. Steward Senior suffered a recurrence of acute myocardial infarction. She was brought in fairly promptly, but… her condition isn't optimistic.
"As her family, you should prepare yourselves for the worst."
Annie clenched her fists tightly.
No! Not again! She wouldn't just stand by and watch Irene die in this lifetime!
Her voice trembled as she pleaded, "Doctor, I'm begging you… Please save my grandma. Whatever it takes, or whatever it costs, just save her!"
Christian wrapped his arm firmly around her trembling shoulders and pulled her into his hold before looking up at the doctor. "We'll fully cooperate with the treatment. Please use the best medication and treatment plan available."
Malcolm sighed and nodded. "We'll do everything we can."
As Annie left the office, her legs felt like jelly. If Christian wasn't holding her up, she might have collapsed.
After they left, the office door remained ajar, and hushed voices drifted out.
"Wasn't that Sean's ex-fiancée?" a young intern curiously asked.
"Yes. She's the eldest daughter of the Stewards. I didn't expect her to be so beautiful in person."
"Who was that man with her? His presence was powerful, so he's definitely not an average guy."
"No idea, but it looks like there's something going on between the two of them."
As Malcolm listened to their gossip, his expression darkened.
"Enough!" he snapped, and people in the office immediately fell silent.
"Have you all forgotten? The higher-ups have made it clear that Dr. Frost's personal matters are not to be discussed. If the hospital administration hears you gossiping, you'll all face disciplinary action!"
