Rowan took in Sean's shell-shocked appearance and sighed. He patted the back of Sean's hand, trying to calm him down. "Sean, stay calm," he reassured.
Rowan then guided him a few steps to the side. Once they were away from the busy corridor, his expression turned extremely serious. "Ms. Lambert's condition is quite grave," he said.
Sean's heart instantly sank.
"I'm sorry to say this, but Ms. Lambert's leukemia has relapsed," Rowan added.
Those few words hit Sean like two heavy hammers, slamming right into his heart. His vision went dark for a moment, and he nearly lost his balance.
He didn't know how that was possible.
Cecilia had already undergone the bone marrow transplant, and everything had been improving. As such, a relapse wasn't possible.
Seeing how pale Sean had become, Rowan didn't want to say more. But as a doctor, he had no choice but to continue.
"This time, the relapse is rather severe and extremely dangerous. She needs to undergo a second surgery as soon as possible. Tell me, should we send her straight to the transplant unit, or would you like to handle the admission paperwork first?"
At this point, Sean's mind was completely blank. He stared at Rowan, his lips trembling, but he couldn't utter a single word.
He needed to calm down. After all, he was a doctor. However, he just couldn't.
The person lying in the ward, fighting for her life, was Cecilia—the very person Sean had sworn to protect for the rest of his life.
Suddenly, Sean returned to his senses. It was as if he had grabbed onto the last remaining lifeline. "I-I need to make a phone call," he stammered.
He staggered a few steps back and turned toward the window at the end of the corridor. Then, he pulled out his phone.
Sean's fingers were shaking violently. After a few fumbling tries, he finally unlocked the screen and pulled up a number he had pinned at the top.
It belonged to the family of the person who had previously donated bone marrow to Cecilia.
