Reagan
Whether it’s the mate bond or if I just like Kieran, I can already feel myself falling for him.
‘He’s sweet,’ Alayla says.
‘His wolf isn’t.’
‘His wolf was nearly feral and could still become feral if we don’t accept him. We’ve both heard Dad’s stories about Cyran starting to go feral. He only survived as long as he did because he’s so strong. It’s the same with Kieran and Samson. He’d have to be strong to be mated to me,’ she says smugly.
‘No argument there,’ I say, looking over at Kieran when I hear the sound of his breathing deepening. He stayed awake all morning talking and he ate a decent lunch, so I’m not surprised that he’s fallen back to sleep.
We’ve been driving for several hours when Kieran’s phone rings through the Bluetooth. I check the caller and when I see it’s Gamma Elias, I hang up and call Meadow on my phone so we don’t disturb Kieran.
“I told you everything was fine,” Meadow says, obviously talking to Elias as she answers the phone. “Gamma Elias would like to pull over so we can take a break, and he can take the lead from here,” she says, this time talking to me.
“Okay. Kieran has been sleeping since we left the diner and he’s still sound asleep. I don’t want to wake him if I don’t have to. He obviously needs the sleep.”
“He’s not the only one,” Meadow says, talking to Elias again.
“That magic thing you did really helped,” he says.
“It was that or watch you fall asleep at the wheel and kill us both,” she replies, obviously aggravated. They had argued about who would drive after lunch and Elias had won. Obviously, that wasn’t a good thing.
“Hey, does the pack know we’re coming?” I ask, breaking up their squabbling. Meadow has obviously put Elias in the ‘brother’ category with Tate and all of my brothers.
“Uh, no. Do you want me to call Beta Markus and let him know we’ll be there tonight?” Elias asks.
I only have to think about it for a minute. The lack of ‘leadership’ isn’t just coming from Kieran going feral. Based on what I’ve learned about Elias, he’ll do anything to keep Kieran sane and the pack together. So, I want to see what the pack is like when we arrive unexpectedly. I want to get a feel for how this Beta is running the pack and if I’m right, he’ll be acting like HE’S the Alpha when we get there.
“No. We’ll have the pack congregate when we get there,” I say.
When we stop, I’m not surprised that Meadow comes to talk to me while Elias checks on Kieran, as if I wouldn’t keep him safe.
“Why don’t you want to call ahead?” she whispers.
“I’m not getting a good feeling about this Beta,” I say.
She makes a point of looking at my neck and the amulet that she and her family made for me. “Keep that on. If you’re right, he’s not going to be happy that Kieran found you or that you’re a powerful Guardian. Kieran’s still unstable. All this Beta has to do is take you out and he’s back on top.”
“Since when am I an easy target?” I ask, raising my eyebrow at her.
“We have no idea what we’re walking into Rea. If this Beta has been working against Kieran all this time, he’ll have also been working the pack against him. You know I’ll watch your back, but you need to as well.”
“I have one of the strongest witches alive as a best friend and my wolf is as strong as they come. I’m not worried. But Beta Markus will be if he crosses me.”
“Can you do that magic thing where you make sure Alpha is protected while we’re inside?” Elias asks nervously.
“I already did it,” Meadow says, rolling her eyes.
“You did?”
“Well, yeah. He’s obviously not getting up,” she says.
We go to the bathroom, get some coffee and water for the road and then head back to the cars. We’ve been going up into the mountains for a while, but we obviously still have a ways to go.
“How much further is it?” I ask him.
“From here, two, maybe three hours depending on the weather. Up in the mountains we can get snow flurries all way into July. It’s rare, but this early in spring, we could have snow, ice, or sludge.”
“Well, I’m following you,” I say, getting back in the truck. I see that Elias put a blanket over Kieran again. He’s definitely not the problem in the pack.
As we take off, I dial my father.
“It’s about time you called me, Reagan. Your brother and I were about to send the pack out after you,” he says by way of greeting.
“It’s great to hear your voice too, Dad,” I say sarcastically.
He sighs. “Are you doing okay?”
“I’m good. We’re about two to three hours away from Kieran’s pack.”
“How’s he been on the trip?” he asks and I tell him about Samson needing to be close to me last night and about how much he’s sleeping.
“I’m not surprised. He was closer to going feral than I was.”
“Yeah, I figured that.”
We talk for a little bit longer, my father tells me he still wants to hear from me every day and then we say our goodbyes.
The roads where I’m driving become more windy as we get higher up in the mountains. But even at night, I can see how beautiful the area is. I roll my window down halfway and take in the fresh air as Alayla pushes forward, eager to run and smell the forest around us.
“It smells wonderful, doesn’t it?” a sleepy Kieran asks beside me.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” I tell him.
“Apparently, I’ve been sleeping for hours again. It’s probably good that I’m waking up. We’re only about an hour outside of my pack.”
“I didn’t have Elias tell them we were coming.”
He shrugs. “That’s fine. Markus should be prepared for my return if he hasn’t heard from Elias yet.”
I’m not so sure about that, but I keep those thoughts to myself.
Kieran rolls down his window and my hair begins blowing around in the breeze. The air is much colder here than back home, but it’s crisp and clean.
“Home,” Samson says in a purring rumble.
I follow Gamma Elias as he drives up to the guard gate. I wait while he speaks to the guard whose head snaps in our direction. He looks from me to Kieran and back before looking back down at Elias and nodding before stepping back.
As we pull up, Kieran leans over.
“Welcome home, Alpha.”
“Thank you, Thomas. Did Gamma Elias tell you to inform Markus that we’re here and to alert the pack?”
“He told me to have everyone meet in the main hall,” he says before looking at me. “Welcome, Luna.” He bows his head deferentially to me.
