Chapter74
“My mom wanted me to have a family, and she forgave my dad, but there’s one thing she never got over: the pain of knowing her Insband, whom she trusted completely, who loved another woman and was about to have a child with her. He’d visit their graves every week, and my mother would cry alone, hiding her heartache. I refuse to become that person, carrying the weight of betrayal and heartbreak for a lifetime. I won’t relive her pain.” 1 declared affirming.
“Cheating is despicable, Keith. No matter the reason, It’s inexcusable to me. If it had stopped at a kiss, though still cheating, I might have tried to forgive you. But you didn’t stop.” My words hit him like a blow, and his eyes welled up with tears.
“Is it all gone?” he asked, his voice trembling. “Don’t you love me anymore?” His eyes searched mine, filled with desperation and fear, as if my answer would seal his fate.
“I don’t love you anymore,” I confirmed not missing the way he flinched, and still it wasn’t half of what I felt when I saw him in bed
with her.
“You’ve killed that love in me.” Keith’s face contorted, as if he’d been punched in the gut. I felt a mirror of his anguish, the pressure of
his earlier confession still churning my stomach.
“Now that everything’s settled,” I said, exhaustion seeping into my voice, “I have an appointment tomorrow. If you want to be part of Jour baby’s life without disrupting mine, you’re welcome. Honestly, Keith, I’m drained. I don’t have the energy to fight you anymore.” I
sniffled, tears welling up once more.
“I’ll be there,” he promised with sincerity. “I don’t want to hurt you anymore than I already have. But I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t try to win you back, Doll.” His eyes locked onto mine, filled with open, hopeful determination, a spark of longing reigniting within them.
“You can’t,” I stated flatly, “and you’ll only end up hurting yourself if you try.” With that, I ended the futile conversation. “I’ll text you the address,” I said, my tone detached, before turning to leave his house, shutting the door firmly behind me.
As I drove back to my apartment, the harsh reality sank in deeper like the words drilled a hole and I was injected with that acidic truth. I was merely a convenient option for Keith, the man I once believed was my everything. The acknowledgement was heartbreaking, but I refused to surrender to tears or sorrow. I was drained, emotionally spent, and I knew I deserved better than to waste another moment grieving for someone who didn’t truly value me.
As I stepped into my bedroom, my gaze fell upon the lamp, and my mind wandered to Deckard. I felt a pang of longing, wishing he was by my side. His calming presence and soothing words always seemed to bring solace, like hope from heaven on the doomsday.
Once I changed and laid in bed, I dialed Deckard’s number without hesitation, knowing it was impulsive, but unable to help myself. He might be busy, tied up in a meeting or absorbed in something important, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d answer. After all, he’d promised to be there for me, and I’d never tested that promise before. His words echoed in my mind ‘I’ll be here for you” Now, 1 was holding him to it.
“Hey Hamsty,” his deep cheerful voice filled the line, answering on the first ring. In the background, Hendrix’s unmistakable growl echoed, followed by a sarcastic mutter: “Are you fucking kidding me?” And Deckard chuckled, dismissing him.
An uncontrollable whimper broke free, and Deckard’s tone shifted instantly from calm to alarmed. “Karry, what happened? Are you alright? Why are you crying?” His words tumbled out in rapid concern. “Are you alone? Are you safe? What can I do? Tell me, please.” His urgency even through the phone, was as if he was already preparing to jump into action.
“Can you…would it be top much if I need you?” I asked, my voice trembling as I snittled, trying to hold back tears.
