ChapterBo
“Gah, no! I’d rather cat trash.” Maggie playfully slapped my arm, laughing.
“Hey, I’ve improved” she protested, though we both knew it was a ridiculous claim. Her cooking disasters were legendary, and I had no desire to risk another burnt, inedible meal
I stepped out of the house, feeling a several emotions anxiety, excitement. Despite the uncertainty ahead, I couldn’t help but yearn to see her. Today, I’d meet Karissa and our unborn child, and the thought sent my heart racing to life.
The knowledge that I was taking deliberate steps towards transformation brought an unfamiliar sense of serenity, one that previously only Karissa’s presence could provide. Her absence had left à gaping vold in my life, and I ached to have her back in my arms, by my side, and within the walls of our home. The longing to hold her close, to feel her warmth, and to share quiet moments together once
again sat
heavily on my heart.
I parked in front of her apartment building, punctial as planned. Right on cue, a few minutes later Karissa emerged from the metal gates, her eyes locking onto my car. She quickened her pace.
As she opened the door and slid into the passenger seat, she buckled up with a quiet efficiency. “Hey,” she said softly, her gaze meeting mine for a moment before she turned to face the road ahead.
I pulled out of the parking spot, my eyes darting briefly to Karissa. “How are you doing? Has the morning sickness started yet? I asked, trying to sound casual despite my concern.
Karissa’s silence lasted a beat too long, and I sensed a hint of unease. She let out a soft sigh before responding “Yeah, the morning sickness has started…. but I was spotting a few days back, so…” Her words trailed off, her gaze drifting out the window as she stared blankly at the passing scenery.
I knew that look, that quiet contemplation. It was a visible sign that Karissa’s mind was racing with thoughts she didn’t want to share.
“We’ll find out everything’s okay, okay?” I said softly, trying to alleviate her fears.
As we idled at the traffic light, Karissa’s gaze wandered to her smoothie joint on the comer, a flicker of longing crossing her face. 1 seized the opportunity, taking a sudden turn into the parking lot. I killed the engine and hopped out, leaving Karissa raising an eyebrow in surprise.
Minutes later, I returned to the car, bearing a neatly wrapped bundle that made her eyes sparkle
“Your favorite,” I offered handing her the fresh smoothie. Karissa’s face lit up, a radiant smile spreading across her face as she dig the straw and began slurping.
“Thank you,” she said, her voice infused with genuine delight. For a moment, her worries seemed to fade, replaced by simple pleasure. I grinned slightly, happy to have brought her a small joy.
As I watched Karissa savor her drink, a pang of longing struck my chest, I yearned to end the distance between us, to reach out and kiss her, to hold her close and feel her warmth. But my regrets hung heavy on me, reminding me that I’d lost the right to call her mine.
The memory of her words was still stabbing me repeatedly my. “You’ve killed that love in me.” The finality of those words still lingered, echoing in my mind in a haunting loop. Had I truly extinguished the flame that once burned bright between us? The thought brought me to the brink of tears, my eyes stinging with regret.
I glanced away, hiding my emotions as I focused on the road ahead. But my gaze drifted back to Karissa, studying her features, searching for any sign that might contradict her words. Was it truly gone, or was there still a spark hurried inside? The uncertainty gnawed at me, leaving me with a hollow ache.
“Are you feeling fine?” I asked again, concern dancing in my voice as I navigated the left turn.
