Liana’s expression twisted, her features contorting with barely suppressed emotion.
Cyrus couldn’t help but regret ever caving to his mother’s pressure and marrying her. It was, without a doubt, the biggest mistake of his life.
Liana was unstable—her mind just wasn’t right.
When they first got married, she tried to control every aspect of his life. She demanded he be at her beck and call around the clock, constantly checked up on him, even installed a tracking app on his phone.
Once, when he met a client at a hotel to discuss a business deal, Liana saw his location and stormed over in a jealous rage, beating the client half to death without a word of explanation.
He couldn’t have any women around him—not as friends, not as colleagues, not even as household staff. His secretary, assistant, and all their help at home were men.
It was suffocating. He tried to have a calm conversation with her, to explain that they both needed space. She accused him of not loving her.
Maybe they could have grown to love each other after getting married, but her behavior drove him further and further away.
He’d asked for a divorce—twice. Both times, she threatened to hurt herself if he left.
She’d even sworn that if he ever divorced her, she’d become nothing more than a corpse.
Between her desperate pleas and his mother’s attempts to smooth things over, he found himself right back where he started.
With his mother present, Cyrus couldn’t allow himself to lose his temper. In the end, he relented and agreed to take Liana to see a movie.
“All right,” he said, “Why don’t you come with us, Mother?”
Old Mrs. Harper saw right through him and waved her hand dismissively. “You two go on ahead. The movie theater’s too loud for my heart.”
Liana was nearly giddy with excitement, barely able to contain herself. Her husband, actually agreeing to go out shopping and to a movie with her? That had never happened before.
Did this mean he was finally starting to accept her? It had to.
Blushing, she nearly skipped up the stairs, overwhelmed by his rare tenderness. In her room, she rummaged through her closet for the perfect outfit for their date, then carefully applied her makeup.
Just as she was about to leave, her phone rang.
Liana picked up. “Liana, I’ve already registered. Are you bringing the goods yourself, or should I come get them?” a man’s voice asked.
She suddenly remembered—she was supposed to take care of something important today. But Old Mrs. Harper and her husband’s unexpected return had completely thrown her off.
Still, this was something that had to be done. She’d already made all the arrangements. Only by getting rid of that woman could her relationship with her husband truly be fixed. Only then would he finally accept her.
After a moment’s thought, she replied, “Don’t rush. Something came up, so I’ll be going out soon. Why don’t you come pick it up yourself?”
The man lowered his voice. “What’s going on, Liana? Did something happen?”
Liana turned to the window, gazing out at the view with a sly smile. “It’s nothing. Just do as I say. Come in an hour, and be careful—don’t let anyone find out.”
