A wave of mockery rippled through the crowd. “Looks like someone’s backpedaling now. Can you believe there are actually guys in our class who have a crush on Whitney and Celine? Clearly, love is blind—fake angels, both of them.”
Students whispered, glancing and pointing at the group in question. Suddenly, the atmosphere froze.
There was no way Celine and her friends were actually going to bark like dogs, let alone streak across the quad.
Sabrina didn’t have the patience for theatrics. She cut straight to the point.
“So? Are you going to bark or not?”
Elena and her friends exchanged uneasy glances, their faces darkening.
Bark like dogs? Who the hell would dare?
But if they refused, it’d look like they couldn’t handle losing. How were they supposed to hold their heads up at school after this?
They were caught between a rock and a hard place. Either way, it was mortifying.
Still, as humiliating as barking like dogs would be, shamelessly going back on their word didn’t seem so bad by comparison.
Elena straightened her back, defiant. “Sabrina, this is too much. We’re girls—how can you expect us to bark like dogs or streak around campus?”
She was saying what all her friends were thinking.
Stella propped her chin on her hand and gave a slow, exaggerated whistle. “Wow, never thought I’d see someone stoop so low.”
Others chimed in, their disdain clear.
“Unbelievable. All talk, no action. Pathetic.”
“If Sabrina had lost, you just know they’d be forcing her to do it.”
“Exactly. Bunch of spoiled princesses—honestly, if this is how they handle a bet, how do their families even stay in business?”
Sabrina remained unfazed. She turned to Whitney. “Whitney, you’re the one who challenged me in the first place. Don’t tell me you’re backing out now?”
Whitney hesitated. She’d always been confident in her grades, and she was certain there had to be something off about this test.
She finally spoke up, voicing her suspicion.
“Exactly. You barely know your ABCs and you’ve never even attended class. How could you suddenly solve high school test questions? Doesn’t that seem suspicious to anyone else?”
The implication hung heavy in the air: Sabrina must have cheated.
Sabrina just scoffed.
“The fact is, I won. That’s all there is to it.”
Her refusal to directly answer only made Elena more furious. She stamped her foot.
“Stop dodging the question! How do you explain that massive difference in your scores? You owe us a real answer!”
Sabrina simply shook her head.
Did these people really think they knew her?
They were so quick to take a stranger’s word at face value, so sure they’d found her weakness.
They had no idea.
