He extended his hand in front of Sabrina, all gentlemanly charm.
“Miss Sabrina, may I have this dance?”
She would never dance with a man.
With a cool, distant look, Sabrina was just about to decline when Bryce materialized out of nowhere.
“Sorry, sir, but Ms. Sutton already has a dance partner—me.”
The man was thrown off by Bryce’s sudden appearance. Considering Bryce’s status, he couldn’t say much, so he forced a polite smile. “Ah, so Ms. Sutton’s partner is Mr. York. My apologies.”
With that, he awkwardly took his leave.
As soon as he left, Bryce shot Sabrina a playful wink. “How was that? Did I save the day or what?”
Sabrina couldn’t help but laugh at his theatrics. “Yes, yes, you did.” She gave him a thumbs-up in mock approval.
“Hey, where’s Stella?” Bryce glanced around. He hadn’t seen her since the party started—who knew where that little rascal had run off to. It was impossible to find anyone to chat with.
“She’s over there with Grandma,” Sabrina replied, pointing to the farthest corner from the center of the ballroom.
The music was too loud near the stage; it was hard on Grandma’s heart, so she stayed well away from the noise. Stella had been at her side the whole evening—Sabrina had specifically asked her to keep Grandma company, especially since she had a feeling tonight wouldn’t go smoothly.
With the Sutton family’s two petty foster daughters around, it would be a miracle if nothing went wrong tonight.
Stella noticed Sabrina and Bryce looking her way and waved to signal that everything was just fine with Grandma.
Bryce stuck his hands in his pockets. “Go handle your business—I’ll catch up with you later. I’m going to chat with Stella for a bit.”
“Yes, yes, go ahead, practice as much as you like.”
Sabrina and Bryce exchanged a glance and promptly slipped out of the ballroom.
Watching their retreating backs, Desmond thought for a moment. There was still another main character tonight. Even without Sabrina, Hester could keep up appearances in the ballroom.
“Hester, come here,” Desmond called, quickly spotting her not far away, watching the scene unfold.
Just as he spoke, Sommer walked up beside him.
Hester, caught off guard by being singled out, froze for a second. She’d seen Sabrina leave with that dashing young gentleman. Something wasn’t right—she’d hoped to see some drama, but instead, Sabrina had left the party. Was the plan not working? If tonight’s opportunity slipped by, it would be much harder to try anything in the future.
Still, with all eyes now focused on her, she had no choice but to put on her best face.
