Carter’s brow tightened. “How did he so easily find someone that capable?”

She told him about meeting Liam-how Thomas had arranged it, how the young hacker had said he could fix the breach in three days.

Carter listened silently.

“Sharon,” he said, “beating the number-one hacker in such a short time isn’t an easy feat-it’s a crushing victory. Someone with that kind of skill isn’t ordinary. Do you really believe the person Thomas introduced to you is just a simple taxi driver?”

Before she could answer, he added, “And what are the odds Thomas just happens to know someone like that?” 1

Sharon lowered her eyes, picking up his meaning. She gave a small smile. “No matter what, if he can solve the problem, that’s what matters.”

Carter’s expression softened, but worry lingered in his voice. “Sharon…”

She met his gaze. “If Thomas has an ulterior motive, he wouldn’t offer his help so openly to invite suspicion. I think he’s just helping me.”

Carter could see how much trust she placed in Thomas. Without evidence, pressing the issue would only push her away. He rubbed his temple-Julliard’s situation still hadn’t been clarified, and now Thomas had entered the picture as well.

In Jamie’s office, Silas lounged on the sofa, watching the news and smirking.

“Jamie,” he drawled, “weren’t you worried about Sharon’s cunning? Thought she had some kind of edge? Look at her now-she’s lost over two billion, and I’ve stolen most of her orders. The Kalen Group’s shareholders have already lost faith in her. If this continues, all the reputation she built will be gone.”

He leaned back, satisfied. “Even if they can’t expel her from Kalen Group, once she joins the top brass, she’ll only have a title without power.”

Jamie had watched for days and, finding no other surprises, relaxed.

“I overestimated her,” he said coolly. “She’s fragile where it counts.”

Silas’s eyes gleamed with a new thought; he lowered his voice conspiratorially. “The hacker you hired-this Q- are you sure he’s unbeatable? What if Sharon finds someone stronger midway?”
