“Help you?” Jamie let out a low, cutting laugh. “You were nothing more than a toy to him–a diversion when he was bored. All that so–called help he gave you? It cost him nothing, just a few words. Kelly, you think far too highly of yourself. He knew from the very beginning that you were a fake.”
Jamie and Thomas were the same kind of men when it came to playing with people’s hearts, Jamie was an
expert.
Kelly was no master liar. Fooling Johanna and Victoria was one thing, but deceiving men like them–men who had crawled out from under corpses–was a joke.
Jamie looked down at her from above.
“Haven’t you ever thought about it? You think someone as ruthless as Thomas would fall head over heels just because of one piece of music? If he were really that easy to sway, would you be lying here like this today?”
He understood now. All that talk about a first love, about finding someone who could redeem him–it was just another story Thomas told for fun.
Only women like Kelly and Johanna would fall for that nonsense.
No man in his right mind would worship someone whose face he’d never even seen. What if she turned out to be plain, or hideous, or old enough to be his mother? Wouldn’t that make for lovely nightmares?
He had called Victoria his first love because they had truly connected once–she had spoken to him, comforted
him, reached a part of him no one else had.
But this violin girl? What had she ever done? Saved his life? Helped him in any real way?
No. She’d played a single song in a garden.
If he had seen her face, maybe you could call it love at first sight. But Thomas had only seen her back, heard a melody and Kelly, in all her foolish confidence, thought that was enough to bind a man like Thomas.
Ignorance, Jamie thought, truly was fearless.
He studied her pale, bloodless face, and said coldly, “The only reason he kept you around was to use you against Johanna.”
He shook his head slowly. “Hard to believe Johanna fell because of someone so stupid.”
Scenes flickered through Kelly’s mind–moments that had never quite made sense before suddenly aligning with cruel clarity. But even so, she couldn’t accept it. Couldn’t bear to believe Thomas had been toying with her all along
“If Thomas was just playing me,” she demanded hoarsely, “then why did he come to me himself? Why plant himself in Sharon’s camp?”
Jamie leaned back in his chair, tone indifferent. “He’s close to Sharon because she has something he wants.”
He’d guessed as much–Thomas must have known Sharon’s true identity long ago. That would explain his
