**When She Opened the Door to the Life She Was Afraid to Live by Nora Vale Kingsley**
**Chapter 368: Every Favor Counts**

“Weren’t you the one who said you wanted to talk?”

A sense of confusion washed over Marcus as he watched Silas turn his back and walk away, the words hanging in the air between them like unfulfilled promises.

Silas waved dismissively, his tone casual. “No need anymore.”

Marcus stood there, momentarily speechless, grappling with the indifference in Silas’s reply.

What is going on with him? Why does it feel like Silas is acting strangely?

“Marcus!”

Suddenly, Lucien burst out of his room, his urgency palpable. Upon spotting Marcus in the living room, he hurriedly approached him, speaking in a rushed manner.

“Tell Emma this for me. I just received an urgent assignment. I’ll be gone for a few days. Make sure she knows not to worry about me. And you all, take good care of her.”

“Yeah, I got it,” Marcus replied, nodding in understanding, his mind racing as he watched Lucien dash out the door, a whirlwind of energy and purpose.

Just a few moments later, Emma appeared at the top of the stairs, freshly washed and dressed, her hair cascading around her shoulders like a golden halo. As soon as their eyes met, Marcus relayed Lucien’s message, his voice steady despite the undercurrent of anxiety he felt for her.

When Emma heard that Lucien had been called away on a sudden mission and wouldn’t return for several days, a knot of worry tightened in her chest. The thought of him out there, possibly in danger, sent a shiver down her spine. But she understood this was part of his job. No matter how unsettled she felt, she knew she couldn’t pull him back from his duty.

With a determined flick of her wrist, Emma pulled up her lightcore and sent him a message, her fingers flying over the screen as she urged him to stay safe and take care of himself.

“Ms. Tibarn, breakfast is ready,” Kieran called out from the kitchen doorway, his voice cutting through the tension in the air.

“Coming,” she replied, shaking off her worries for the moment.

Emma gestured for Marcus to follow her as she made her way toward the dining room.

Drake emerged from the kitchen, carrying a platter laden with their breakfast, and set the dishes down in front of her with a flourish.

“Emmy, I made all of this today! Please, try it. Let me know if you like it!”

Kieran nodded earnestly, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. “Ms. Tibarn, Mr. Smith prepared everything himself. He was very meticulous about it. I tasted it, and I must say, the flavor is even better than mine.”

Having accepted Drake’s gift earlier, Kieran felt a sense of obligation to speak on his behalf, eager to support the budding chef.

Emma met Drake’s hopeful gaze and lifted her spoon, taking a cautious taste of the oatmeal.

A smile broke across her face, warmth flooding her heart. “It’s really good.”

Drake’s face lit up, a spark of joy igniting in his eyes. “As long as you like it! I’ll keep learning from Kieran. Whatever you want to eat, I’ll make it for you.”

His desire to build a good relationship with Lucien and the others paled in comparison to his longing for Emma’s acceptance. He understood that winning her over meant going the extra mile, doing things that would bring her happiness.

“Drake, you don’t need to do all this,” Emma said gently, her voice laced with concern.

She knew deep down that Drake wasn’t her mate. Once his mental powers stabilized, he would likely return to the Aquadome. The more effort he poured into these gestures now, the more she feared he would regret them later.
